$1800.00 rolling Ironhead for sale
Point well taken. I have written it off. The engine rebuild could be verified by a local HD builder in Santa Fe, so it wasn't just complete trust in this Cat's word. Also the parts he was offering for my 70's top end were new that he had extra from another project from what he said. However I did not see them, so who knows. If they weren't new, I would not have taken them. Don't need more problems.
The guy lost credibility w/ me as of yesterday. I have emailed for directions twice now to no avail or response. His loss. My thought was to just look at it. If it looked like it was a decent deal, part out most of it.

In my opinion you made an excellent choice with letting this machine pass. When you have 2 machines that need attention, you have double expenses flowing out of your wallet. There is no short cut to this, and $1800 is a great outlay of cash for a bike that will not start up so you can listen to it/test ride it.
When the subject is regarding finding a qualified mechanic, here's what you do...........
Suspect everybody! Do not take anyone's word that so and so is a great ironhead mechanic. Theses guys have to prove it to you! There are so many phonies out there that they cannot be counted.
A guy has a shop and he needs to run money across the counter to keep the lights on. He does not have to be a good mechanic, just a good enough talker to bull**** you to the point you are handing over your hard earned cash. Most of them are like that.
As far as getting some of that $400 returned, I would not be too hopeful. Just consider it part of a lesson most of us learn.
The best way to attack work on an ironhead is to get yourself a factory service manual and begin to learn about the ironhead engine.
Most of it can be done at home in your garage or home shop using that manual. Activities requiring machine work require a good machine shop. But here you may find it easier picking a machine man rather than a so-called great mechanic. If a guy can do the machine work, most likely the equipment sitting in his shop will be evidence of his ability to do the work. Easier to judge this than it is to evaluate a mechanic with a tool box anyway.
I hope you get your 1970 running well soon. keep us posted on the progress.............pg
