Primary and engine oil confusion

I'm running Rev Tech 70w in engine and Rev Tech's High Performance Gear and Chaincase Lube for Sportsters in the Tranny

That is a gear oil recommendation. 80w gear oil is about equal to mid 20 thru mid 30 weight engine oil.

are you saying 80w gear oil is the same as 30w engine oil?if you had a cup of each you couldnt tell the difference???----------i dont understand...i am not sure what i am missing.

The weight numbers for gear oil are not the same as the weight numbers for engine oil. I personally do not know what they represent or how they are determined, just that they are not the same.

i honestly never knew that.i always assumed(theres that word again..) that it was the same rating system.i understand there was most likely different additives for a gear oil compared to an engine oil but i always thought the weight of it would be on the same scale.

I have a early 84 with a gen and harley sugg. 50wt and sportster tranny fluid manual says just heavy motor oil
