Help stop the Brake Rattle!!!
I have a 1980 XL. The dual front disc make lots of rattling noise. I put some foam between the caliber and fork, but maybe not enough. What has everyone else come up with?
They are supposed to be loose - it is part of the design. Yes, the FM and parts books have a piece of foam tape in there. Mine [1980] are loose but do not make noticeable noise. I wonder if the bolt holes are worn? This would happen if at some time the pistons got stuck.

It's common that they rattle...almost alike feature. Usually mounting bolt holes are worn bigger and noise comes from there. I have seen that holes are bored bigger (=round) and there is sleeve made of brass or billet aluminium ( custom made) As IronMick wrote they need to be loose, otherwise brakes don't work.

Rattle GONE!!!
Thanks for everyones help. I found the source of my rattle. It was definitely the calibers rattling but the cause was the glazed rotors. My rotors were glazed over when my calibers locked up. I rebuild them and put on new pads but never touched the rotors so the new pads were skipping. I sanded off the glaze and problem is gone, thanks to a friend of mine.
