Great suggestion Poco! I never thought of using tape, but that would work well to keep the air out.

The last one I rebuilt that burned a piston had pieces in the cam cover,oil pump, and crankcase.I did the top end only after hours of pressure washing the inside of the cases upside down,Had to use new cams,shims,Gears and gaskets in oil pump just to be safe,turned the rods by hand to ck oil flow before reassembly of top.Got lucky..all because of a intake leak.The bike was ridden home 40 miles on one cylinder to.With any luck,Yours wont be as bad..but like P.G. says,best to split the cases.
