I was replaceing my starter on my 71 and on inspection of the drive gear i noticed i have two broken teeth on drive gear and it will have to be replaced so my question is can i replace this gear through the primary and can i just replace the drive gear with out disassembling shaft assembley
OK,I have answered my own questions! I have disassembled and removed gear so my next question is has anyone had this problem? I was thinking to much compression or mybe timing to advanced.it has a crane Hi4 module and on inspection the spark had been advanced and I had heard that would made her hard to start and has anyone used a compression release on a engine of this type? I have used them on small four cycle and had very good results.thanks for reading and all the help
...it has a crane Hi4 module and on inspection the spark had been advanced ...
The "SpkAdv" pot can be used to change the ingition timing within 4`. Having it turned to the right does not make the ignition timing too advanced. To check the timing use a timing light; or follow the static timing instructions for the Hi-4 - should be available on a Crane or S&S website.
What i did with the Hi-4 was set up the timing with the pot set at the middle; then i could advance or retard it by 2` by simply turning the pot. Technically this is not exactly the same as turning the timing plate, but it is close enough.
On kick start it fires on the first revolution - easier starting for the leg guy. On electric start it fires on about the 3rd [?] revolution - they say that waiting for a couple of revs is easier on the starter motor.

IronMick is right, engine rotates complete revolution before ignition "gives" spark.
So if it's middle of rotation it turns 2 before spark, bike starts much easier.
