Default Coil Placement

I mounted my coil up high between the heads on my 78. It was a cheap coil replacment from a discount on line retailer. It must have gotton hot sitting up between the heads, because it craked and broke away from the mounting flange.I rigged it with apoxy and zip ties and rode all summer. Now its apart and I am fixing some issues. The questions is, can i use any coil I want as long as it is 5 ohms? I was thinking about one of the round ones that mounts away from the motor ( i would need to find a spot). Did Sportsters ever come from the factory with this type of coil? Where was it mounted ? I am thinking this would be a better set up for a rough riding, vibrating, hardtail.

Thanks for any help

I am uncertain where it mounted on a 1978, but like 70weight said, on a 1974 (and earlier) it hangs out in the wind under the gas tank.
My 1971 had the thing hanging out in plain sight and I just hated looking at it.
Here is what I did with my coil.

It had one sixteenth of an inch clear of the rear fender, but it fits.
You cannot see it anymore and things like this really clean up a bike in my view.
And cracks in the coil exterior material are OK, as long as it does not zap to ground.
Most coils have these cracks but are still well insulating the internals and that is what is important.

Yep under gas tank, I think that only difference is that coil "towers" are facing left on 78 and older models they are facing back. (I'm not sure if that change happened 79) 5 Ohms is correct coil for points ignition.

Ok under the gas tank is where it mounted from the factory. I moved it to where I believe the factory put the key and choke ****.I was looking at a coil that looks more like an auto coil, round, both plugs and hookups are on top. It has a mounting flange I can bolt it up under the seat out of sight. It is a 5 ohm coil just looks different from the factory one.it is cased in a metal housing. It was in the custom chrome book. Its cheaper than the stock replacemant and comes with new longer plug wires.

I made my own mount and used my exsisting coil and put it under the seat. That coil was fine just the flange was broke off. I made sort of a "pinch" set up the coil slides in and theni tighten it up it looks like it will work but right now its just a bare frame. I can take some pics if you want to see it
