Default Voltage Regulator

Hey folks, still rebuilding my bike, and I came across this issue, do I need a VR? I honestly don't know what they do. My XLH is the same year and it don't have one.

i Voltage regu;ator isa must, controls and limits the output of the generator. without out a voltage regulator your genny will be putting out enough voltage to blow all your lights and ellectrical with a quip blip of the throttle. your xlh if running has one, but you may not know where it is or what it looks like, here are some examples of solid state regulators

cycle elctric end cap regulator * goes on the end of the generator

standard regulator * can be mounted on a special bracket, on the frame rails, or near the battery

mechanical regulator

if you have a generator i cant think of any scenario that you can get away with not having a vreg. with no reg. the generator will not know how much to charge/when to quit and it will burn up.
when i bought my new cycle electric gen/reg combo they said to place an inline 20 amp fuse coming off the gen. in case of a short(which will tell the generator the same thing) i had done that anyway because of an electrical issue but was using a 30 amp cuz i didnt know better.anyway just thought i would throw that in for anyone out there.

You must have one,a voltage regulator tells the Generator/Alternator when to charge, and when to stop charging.

Note also about voltage regulators: they dump the excess volts to ground. If a solid state reg is not well grounded it cannot dump the excess and it will cook itself to death. They are usually grounded by being mounted to the frame. You must ensure that this is a good gound. In addition, it is good practice to run a separate ground wire from the reg to the frame.

I have no experience with that style. The regular ones from ACCEL have an unthreaded hole in the back. I tap that hole for a small bolt.

I wonder how well your style of reg is already grounded? Perhaps additional ground is not necessary. Or there may be a spot in the body that you could tap a hole for a small bolt.

See what others may say about this.

I'd say that it's always good to ad that grounding, these bike do vibrate ... that end cap style make sure that you are using "spring-style" washer in mounting points so that nuts can't vibrate loose.
