Default New to Ironheads

WOO HOO!!!! I just traded a bushmaster AR-15 for a running 79 Ironhead!!! I don't know a damn thing about Ironheads but I guess I'll get a crash course durring the rebuild. I'm not new to Harleys. I've owned a few and worked on several. When I told the wife I got another Harley she was pissed. She thought I bought the 09 Streetglide I've had my eye on. When I told her it's a 79 Sporty, she was cool about it. Now I have to build it the way she likes them, rigid springer!!! Well, Wish me luck. I'll post pics project in 2 weeks when I pick the bike up.

Congrats on the bike! Been working on the same, a 74' rigid/springer. Your wife has good taste!

Thanks Guys. I'm having a hard time waiting to pick up the Ironhead and tear it appart. Can't pick the bike up till the 25th or 26th. My wife said that the parts I've ordered for it are comming in already. I'll see when I get home in 8 days.

Got a 79 myself a few months back in the process of making it a rigid. Got Ledsleds hardtail working on getting the motor out. Can't figure out what they were thinking with the mess of wires in the headlight. Once done I may post some pic;s . Good luck

What hardtail kit did you buy? I ordered the one from V-twin. If you could take a pic or two of where the kit mates up to the stock frame, that would be a huge help. Just need to know where to cut mine.

Go to Ledsledcustoms.com This place is one of the best sportster custom shops in the US.I found them while reading mags to get ideas such as american iron. The head man Pat Paterson is a leader among the sportster crowd. I can try to post some pic's tomorrow but am new to this site. I can tell you that the best way I have come up with is pulling the motor and lining up the new tail so the tranny or rear mount are the same as the stock. I can tell right now that the rear top engine mount will need to be welded back on. If you have an xl I can get the measurments that I will be using as a reference point if you do not have a manual. I have been told by some that it is best to leave the motor on and then cut were needed but don't see how that would work. I have heard v twin has a good tail but have not seen it. check out the site and see if yours is similar. I am about a week or so out as the friend that is going to weld is out of town.

Yeah, the V-twin set up is way different from the leadsled setup. With the V-twin kit you can easily cut and weld with the engine in the frame. Pics would still be cool. You should be able to post pics, you have 10 posts now. Thanks.

U could always just bolt one on. There's another thread in the ironheads section where dude has actually done this and posted the progress. Worth a look anyway. Think its labeled "hard tail/somethin conversion" or something like that. If or when I do mine if its not a bolt on it will be a new frame all together. I'd hate to weld on or chop an old stock frame! Cool thing is, what bolts on, bolts off.. My

Yeah, the V-twin kit bolts on the bottom and welds in on the top. I went this route because the kit was $260 and a frame was $1000. In NY it's damn near impossiable to get a title for a bike with an aftermarket frame. They want the engine numbers to match the frame. Man I HATE New York.
