Default Brake and Ignition problems.

Hi there, I asked this over in the sportster section but I guess my bike is too oldskool so lets try this again.

I just picked up a 72 Ironhead did a bunch of work to it, and took it for a spin the other day (HELL YA! first ride on a Harley!) aside from having the time of my life I have a couple concerns.

The rear break sometimes grinds on itself when i apply a little break (not every time just sometimes) sounds like grinding gears in a transmission and kinda freaks this hell out of me when i'm on the highway lol.

And another thing is we wired a 3 stage ignition (same kind my dad has on his 76 shovelhead and when I turn it off the engine continues to run, I have to pop the clutch and let it die.

I would remove the rear wheel and examine all of the brake components. You definitly need the factory service manual 99484-78 for this; and preferably the parts catalog 99451-78B also.

I do not know what is meant by a 3 stage ignition - never heard the term before. Is it an electronic ignition module? Brand name?

Perhaps others can comment on the run-on after shut-off.

This is the ignition I put it (this isnt my bike) just an example.

And my old man are going to tear down the brake tomorrow.

And as for not turning off, I turn the ignition off and the bike just continues to run.
Not sure what else to say about that.

That is the ignition switch. You will have to dismantle it and check the wires. There is probably a loose or broken wire.

That ignition switch is for BT and has 3 positions (actually 4) , OFF, IGNITION , LIGHTS, ACCESSORY
Wireing has been done wrongly you need to check it. In accessory position you can listen radio or other useless device... without engine is running.
Normally sportsters has only 2 positions
OFF, IGNITION, LIGHTS.
