My 77 XLH is all STOCK like your 78. It had a Bendix Carb also but I change it with one that had a MAIN JET.. No more SMOKE at all. I would ride about 100 miles and check the plug's for color. THE ONLY WAY TO TUNE A BENDIX CARB IS TO HAVE ONE WITH A MAIN JET..
I think you are refering to an adjustable main jet, right?
I have an older Non-adjustable Main jet Bendix carb. I also have an inventory of main jets because as I have changed things on my bike (pipes, baffles, mufflers) I have needed to re-tune the carb. Furthermore, the riding I have done has required some tuning on the road as well.
I have a magneto which doesn't leave clearance to just take the Jet out. I must pull the tank and carb to swap the Jet...but once you've done it a couple of times it only takes a couple of minutes.
I wouldn't change the carb....it is part of what makes the bike unique.
Blackcherry: I glanced at your profile pic after my previous reply and saw your 07 and it didn't match your comment (see quote). I checked your profile. The '75 'ch is a great looking bike that should be displayed as your avatar. It looks like a bike you would enjoy riding and tinkering with for years.

Yeah, I just picked it up in Sept, I had one identical to it 32 years ago when I was 17, when I saw it I had to have it. It is a blast to ride, but needs a little TLC which I have now started since the riding season is done here.
When I joined the forum I only had the 07 and that's of course why my avatar is a pic of that. But you're right, it will be fun to ride and tinker with.
Took your advice and added a pic of it to my signature, I had never even given it a thought.
And thanks for the compliment.

Yes I have the New Bendix that has the Adjustable Main Jet. Make my Life a little more easyer. What great about it is that I check my plugs for color and if it's not the right color I just lean or make it fat. Right now It's set just right.
