my freind has a 74 we got her out of his barn changed fluids cleaned and painted and he was on the road again, good times.after a couple of weeks started haveing problems with the starter.when cranking it will disengage and just spin and then try to engage ,sounds pretty bad lots of clanging we changed the stater silanoid and starter we have checked timing and points weights and springs same thing.all battery cables look good so i pulled of primary cover all looks good in stater housing so at this point where really guessing I think that starter silanoid is being robed of power and disengaging just dont know what to do to correct it. when the plugs are out it turns over great with no problem
A weak battery will cause this. Try starting it by jumping from a known good battery, a car/truck battery for example. Do it with the car/truck not running.
the clutch starter ring gear or the starter bendex gear is worn,i delt with this problem for a while.. finally bought a used like new clutch drum with a good gear and a new bendex, havnt had any problems in 8 years..they sell cast replacement gears to weld on,they are junk, the gears that are made by several steel plates riveted together (stock) dont round off on the corners
We have tried the car battery with jumper cables with no change and tested battery and is good.what Iam I looking for with the bendix and clutch ring gear.cracks ,wear, worn edges.I have took a look at it and all seems in good shape?
I had a similar problem. What's the voltage to the to the bottom lug on the soleniod when you hit the button to start ? I struggled with this problem all winter 2 years ago and finally bit the bullet and took it to my local guy. The problem seemed to be the culmination of a few small things. The biggest one being the solenoid not being square to the case and I guess that limited the movement inside and didn't get enough voltage to turn over. Not sure if we are having the same problem or what but just tossing it out there. I was so baffled I was ready to give up and it took my guy almost a week to get it figured out. My case on top where the soleniod bolted in was striped and thru bolted instead of just a bolt so after a heli- coil that put the soleniod square to the case and it worked. Hope this helps
I would check the solenoid. I went through the same thing and couldnt figure it out. When I discovered that the unit was broke, I would have to push on the copper bolt to make contact and it would turnover fine. I bought two batteries and 2generators before figuring this out. Always just felt like a dead batt.
