Maybe you have run in to this problem ,Any help would be appreciated. 1982 1340ci shovel only have pos cable and starter cable connected to solnoid, strip across connections. when strip connecting two together is pushed and released starter just keeps on cranking until battery is disconnected. Installed quick disconnect on battery case, before that did it in 1st gear at gas station and almost got out in traffic with two guys trying to hold back, battery wires sure got hot and toasted battery. Thanks for any imfo.
Got one in today with a similiar problem. This one toasted the battery before it got here and blew the end of the battery terminal bolt off when hooking up the new one.Solenoid is latching but not releasing on this one...and maybe yours as well.Believe it or not a continously running starter motor can be due to a low battery as well.
Low or weak battery is the most common cause by far.
There is not enough power to remove the load from the clutch ring gear from off the starter drive gear, and as the physical position of the st dv gear is related to the connection of the electrical contacts, it just keeps on winding(or at least tries too).
Other dynamics like misalignment, and bent shafts can also be culprits, but not quite as common.
Although it is not a total fix, you can use a ford type(flh style) starter switch(in conjunction with a bosch type as well if desired), and rewire it so that the battery cable passes across it(it can handle the load). That way, even if the st dv clutch sticks, you will at least have an effective electrical stop, preventing a big burn up while you attempt to free the gear.
If you have a kick start, then vigorously operating it can be an effective method of freeing the gear in a panic moment. As you kick, you remove the load from the gear, allowing the spring to retract the gear(provided that there has not been any serious arcing on the solenoid contacts while the gear was jammed, which can then become the new reason for continued sticking.
Thanks guys for imfo, starter is new( ***** wall) high torque starter, new solnoid , took a part to check and reversed contacts on solnoid this morning, new Drag specility 310CCA high out put battery fully charged (engine seems hard to crank)seems like running battery down faster than normal) for FX because of deminsions fitting battery box with shut off. W3/12-H6/12-L6/12. stater still staying ingauged, am going into primary again to inspect , Any other help would be apprciated , I hate when you get to point of rechecking you work over and over. Thanks again for imfo.
Check all the alignments on everything starter will engage and not let go if something is off and in a bind . I had the same problem when I went to the bigazz starter also , ended up being a cheap *** Lifeline outer primary cover . Was off just enough it would bind the Bendix in the ringgear .
Hi all, Im having the same trouble with my 75 flh. New starter new solnoid two new relays. I took small wire off solnoid and jumped it and still stayed engaged. Clutch ring gear looks good, some wear on the drive ring gear. I pull it out bye hand and it sticks, have to wiggle it to go back. It dose go back when I cut the power from the battery. Weak spring? Also I can see a little weare on the primary cover. thanks for any help. joe
Sometimes it is the simple stuff that gets ya. There is a brass spacer/washer that goes on the jackshaft...when the outer primary is removed, it usually sticks to the cover and falls off later and gets lost. My bike needs two of these to work correctly...just something else to check.
Got in to primary yesterday can't see any thing binding, nothing looks bent, I think its electrical problem due to cutting voltage will disengage drive. Outer primary looks stock, 2 new terry battery cables, Called Dennis Kirk Tech yesterday, they said stater solnoid talked with Shovel owner( said reversing pos leads on solnoid would cause problem long post battery short starter originallly connected this way, but changed to see if cure problem didn't make difference after reversing cables they said I smoked solnoid?). May try to add spring tension to solnoid return? I've heard of Shovels just start cranking setting still on kick stand. Any one ever heard of this. Waiting for the magic fix. If I figure out will post on forum, please do same. Thanks again for suggestions. Tom.
Have washer installed, may try two washers drive go's into ring gear app 7/8s, maybe to far, maybe don't need that much ingaugement . Don't know why that would change though.
