Default headlight

me again, seperate problem. Want to change my headlight mouting. I cant stand the visor mount that my 1976 XLCH has. I would really like it to be a little lower and a little more in front. I bought this, thinking this is want I want/needed
http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup...4-B5D9EF768734
but either I cant find where it fits or it's not going to fit with out some modification(drilling 2 holes in my fork cover thingy?), which I would rather not do if there is a better option.

Maybe this thing instead?
http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup...5-623BDD9E8E90

I dunno, anyone have any experiance relocationg there headlight??

edit: Will I be able to use my current visor mounted housing? Or will I have to buy a new bottom mount light housing?

thanks in advance

Clever......That headiight light bracket goes on the front of the lower fork stem. The lower fork clamp bolts go through it. Years ago I had the chrome cover on mine and had this H/L bracket on it as well. I forget how that worked, but I will see if I have any old photos of my machine with the cover in place. I seem to recall that the cover was held on with the two short screws on the sides of the fork tree..............pg

EDIT NOTE: I would use the first choice of H/L bracket you listed. I currently use this one, but I took off my cover long ago. However, I will try to find out how the cover can work with the bracket and get back to you. I am sure it will work and you do not drill holes in anything to get this to fit. Meanwhile perhaps another member has the answer?

pg, man you are a lot of help! I have that bracket i listed first, just havent opened it, was ready to send it back b/c it really didnt look like it would work. I didnt realize the lower fork stem had a cover on it. I thought the chrome was the actual item. Will try to take the cover off and update the post.

any idea on the housing i mentioned in my edit?? Just wondering if there are any extra parts to include when i make a J&P order tomorrow.

thanks again!!!

Clever.....I am sure I have my old chrome cover up in the attic over the shop. Tomorrow I will climb up there and dig it out to see how it attached. I will let you know. That might be a little late if you order from J&P tomorrow, but I do not think you will need any parts to go with it.

What do you have for a headlight though? I think you will need a Bates type of headlight to use on the bracket. I say that because the original headlight with the top mount bolt will not work, or at least I do not think it will work. The chrome headlight on my Sporty pictured below is a Bates type.

Well, that does bring to mind a part you may need afterall. That is the Bates type H/L mount bolt. It all depends on your light though.
Think this out before you place an order so you can save having to pay another shipping charge, unless you are in a big hurry to get the seals..........pg

clever.....Here is a rather poor shot of the headlight bracket bolted to the front of my Sporty. You can see the two bolts that hold it to the fork clamp........pg

clever.....I tried to email you this morning with info regarding using the cover with the headlight bracket. The email failed to go through for some reason.
Anyway, after finding my cover I was reminded that the way it works is to mount the H/L bracket upside down and then install the chrome cover which attaches to the fork tree using the two short screws to each side of the tree. This is the only way you can use the cover when you have a Bates style H/L and bracket mounted.......pg

ok, i think i can imagine what you mean. This would make the H/L sit extremely low correct?? Well, I will take a peek, and see what it looks like. I was hoping to have a similar H/L set up as your '71. Which, I assume, means the chrome cover has to go and the bracket is right side up. I have no problem with that except for the fact that it looks like I will have to remove my forks to get the cover off. I originally wanted to save the chrome cover b/c its stock and all, also so I, or someone else could put it back in if they wanted. Upon further review I noticed the chrome is coming off of the front of the cover and I am wondering if it’s worth saving.

clever.....You are correct regarding the bracket, cover etc. Reversing the H/L bracket lowers the headlight. It looks OK if the front is extended, but with stock fork tubes something about it looks strange. My opinion only.
If you want a set up like mine, then the cover has to go. The fork tubes will have to be dropped down out of the top fork crown just far enough to remove the cover. The bracket gets bolted on in the intended upright position. You can do all of this in one short operation.
If the chrome is peeling, so much more reason for removing the cover. I WOULD NOT throw it away though. I still have mine after removing it 11 years ago. I found out long ago to never throw anything away that came off a Harley. Someday you or someone else may have a need for it or want to rechrome it and put it to use. As a for instance, a future owner may want to restore the front end to it's original look. You (or he) will be glad you saved this peeling chrome cover should such a time come..........pg

gotcha on keeping the old cover. I think I'm going to wait on getting the new Bates style housing until next spring. It can wait. I have enough problems keeping her going as it is! Thanks for the help.
