Neat slide show, yours idles better than mine, i have some carb issues and i will resolve them, they are very minor, i may have to take it off and clean it to make me happy.
One question, do you have other than stock cam.
98ULTRA. if i was you i would make a new post on helmets, i dont wear one around town, but you have evidence that if you dint have a helmet on when you ran in to deer i think you would not be here, serious, i would post it.
It does sound like it is idling a bit low. Do you have a tach? Does the light come on when you turn on the key?
I think there is great variability among working generators. I clean up my gen and measure the brushes once a year during winter project; replace brushes when down to 1/2". I don't know if this makes a difference.
I don't know the history on this gen, there when I got it. I'm more, fix it when it breaks, so far with this one. It is still under construction.
Yes, the gen light works, oil light too. Had too wire it all up. One wire through the frame when I got it. Also, had to do the oil lines, they were on backwards. Glad I checked.
No tach. The idle is a little higher when it warms up. It wasn't warmed up in the vid.

Unknown about the cam. I'd say stock though. My last Ironhead was supposedly built and had a serious lope at idle.
We have a helmet law in NC. I don't normally wear one when riding in SC. I think I might during deer season from now on though.
Hadn't thought about a helmet thread. I'm sure that would really open a can of worms.
... Also, had to do the oil lines, they were on backwards. Glad I checked ...
I see the oil lines were completely wrong, even running below the frame! This PhotoBucket album contains pics of my oil lines, in case this may be helpful. Somewhere i have word descriptions of these which i could post if needed ...

So i should get one of the long speed screws for ease of adjusting.
right now i have the small screw and would need to carry a screw driver with me, i can go to Lowes and get a screw for that i think, i know they make a fancy one on JP catalog
Just widen the screw slot a bit and solder in a flat washer.
Here is a pic of my Bendix idle adjustment screw done a long, long time ago.
It works well and is easy to change the idle when the engine is cold and then warms up.
No screwdriver needed.

Big guy thanks for the awsome photo, please save it on your file for others to see, for real.
Only one problem here, that carb looks nothing like mine, i think i have a Keihin on my 1981, or do i need to research what carb i have using the numbers? remenber i just bought
this bike and am not school on what is suposed to be on it stock.
My carb does nor say Keihin anywhere, but it very much looks like the late model Keihin CV, but it is not the late model.

Stock carb for 1981 is a Keihin butterfly carb. It may have a code B83F somewhere on the body - this may be where you are reading 883e. It has no VOES port or evaporative port. Stock jets are main 160, slow 68.
