Default Kick Starter Clutch

My starter clutch is worn out, causing the kickstart to slip. The gear is in good condition. I have ordered the clutch gear and rivets. I have no experience at all with rivets and am hoping someone here can give me some help. I was told you would drill the head and punch the rivets to remove them, that's a guess. Any help with installing and removing them would be greatly appreciated.

I have no experience with this. I have heard on other forums that there is a special fixture to position the parts and that this may be necessary. If you do not get an answer here try this ...

what condition is the shaft bushing in that the gear rides on?
I was swap meeting today and found some more bushings for my kicker, so, I'm good for a while now. I have found that replacing the bushing was enough for a significant improvement...but, that is not always the case. I have a replacement gear set also, but it is not OEM it is J&P and it has half the number of teeth on the gear that mounts on the back of the clutch, so, I have been reluctant to put it on.

The last time I replaced the gear set I took the clutch shell into a local machine shop and they did it for me in a few minutes for. I think it cost me about $20. That was probably 15yrs ago though.

Scott, It is the gear on the clutch hub I am replacing. Unfortunately, I live in the sticks, and there is no machine shop here. I need to know how to remove and replace rivets. I have access to tools and welding if needed. Plus I want to know how to do it.

to take the rivets out, just grind or drill them out.. to put the new rivets in,put the rivet threw the parts, rest the back of it on an anvil, mushroom the front of the rivet down with a rivet setting punch and a hammer till its tight..

j1mmy does not say if he has done this specific repair himself, just the usual technique to replace rivits. As i said in my previous post i have not done this before myself, but i do recall that it is a precise operation that requires a special tool; of course i may be wrong.

Best to go to the other forum that i referenced above and ask there.

As I recall the machine shop placed the shell on a shaft that allowed them to ensure everything was centered and lined up. I gave them all the parts(bushings and the gear) required to ensure fitment and alignment prior to installing the rivets. It seems to me the rivets were just stamped in with a small press with an interchangeable head.
Finally, you will want to seal it up with some silicone if you are running a dry clutch set-up.

I wanted to do it myself...but, I was concerned about making things worse if I was not able to get the gear on centered properly. I don't know if it would work ok tapping the rivets on with a hammer...or if the gear would self-center as the rivets are installed.
