The parts catalog has an acorn nut, 5/16-24, HD part number 7680W. Can get these at a specialty nuts & bolts shop, or an automotive-industrial fasteners shop.

I do not recall if -24 is fine or coarse thread. If it is coarse you can probably get it at Home Depot.

Post a pic of exactly where it goes on the bike. I'll try to relate that to the parts catalog and get a part number. With the correct part number there are several internet sources, which i can also provide.

if i didnt have the bag brackets i could use a standard acorn nut, with the brackets the nut has to go thru the bracket the shank of the nut acts as a bushing for the bracket

I'd still try Fastenal or brofasco...they can get some unusual stuff.
Do you recall the manufacturer of the bags and brackets...call them direct.

The local indie shop is a top resource for the IronHead owner. It is fortunate to have one. I patronize mine as much as i can. Much better to buy from the indie, even if it costs a lot more.
