Get a set of shorter fork tubes. If you want it really short, you'll probably need to clip your springs.

I have no direct experience with this myself, but i believe the shorter fork tubes is the only option. You cannot raise the tubes in the trees as you can on some bikes because the tubes are tapered at the top. I think it is not practical to cut off either the top or the bottom because of fitment.

when we had in the past extended a front fork - you add a tin or plastic tube that is the same length that you extended the fork over the stock length

in the end it makes apples apples for right shock type ride cushion and travel --

so you need to buy shorter forks BUT i do not believe they are a stock item at franks anymore as no one really does that - the first high man hole cover should be the end if that idea -- jz

I run a 2" shorter tube on my '73 forks. I clipped the stock length spring down 1" (but I'm running thicker springs than stock). It rides a little stiff, but not a lot. It's a better match for the profile of the 16" rear I swapped in for the 18". Make sure you find tubes for the '73/'74 front end. They may be getting hard to find since the Kayaba fork was fairly short-lived.
