Hey, IronMick I have a question about a 1982 sporty I just bought. I have a 16" rear tire on the back Mt90-16. Is that the right size for that bike? It look to big as in kind of close to the fender, but it's not rubbing. Is it a 130 or 140 that should be on that bike. I'm new to the forum so I'm still trying to figure stuff out. Thanks I appreciate it.

Per the FSM, the stock rear tire for 1980 through 1983 XLH, XLS, and XLX, for both laced and cast wheels, was MT90-16 (Goodyear-Eagle A/T or Dunlop K181).

... and it should be a 130. 140 can be installed with some difficulty [spacing out the rear sprocket, bending the chain guard, etc]. My 1980 came to me with a 140 rear tire which i tolerated for a year or so then replaced with a correct 130 - much better. Guys used to put on the biggest they could. To some guys "size matters"

Hey Yellowstone Kelly, Your 1982 sporty is it the 25th anniversary edition, and do you still owe it? I just pick this one up, 25th anniversary edition been sitting for 20 year. Didn't run when I bought it, but with a little tinkering, it runs good now. All original paint and 25th anniversary edition badges. $1500 could pass it up. Now that I'm older, I really appreciate the old Harley that have been kept stock. Most Harleys people start changing stuff and its hard to find them stock. THANKS YOU GUYS FOR THE INPUT ON THE TIRE.

Yeah, I still own it, it's still my daily rider and has been an incredibly reliable bike. I don't ride nearly as much now as I did in the first 10 years I owned it, but it still runs great.

I'm not sure what makes an '82 the 25th anniversary edition. You say yours has badges? Mine came with what I considered to be a cheesy little plastic eagle attached to the top front of the front fender that said something about the 25th anniversary. I noticed that little eagle was loose one day at Sturgis, so I removed it to keep from losing it and have never gotten around to putting it back on. I remember the sales guy at the Harley dealer made a big deal about it being the 25th year for the Sportster when I bought it.

Otherwise, it's a basic black XLH with original everything except the coil (replaced once), tires, and voltage regulator (replaced three times). I added a short sissy bar and pad, saddlebags, and highway pegs out front to make long trips a little more comfy. Otherwise it's still completely stock.

At $1500 it sounds like you got a heck of a deal.
