I get the sentimental thing, I had a watch restored that my father bought new in 1971 and I remember it on his arm when I was a kid. In that case I say take it right apart and do it right. Repaint the frame and do it justice. The insurance company should still give you some money back when you keep the bike, just not the full amount.
they only kept an extra 250 for me to keep it and far as I can tell so far the motor trans will be OK just the seals around the push rod housings the inner seals were protected. I’ll just be mocking it up and see how it sounds and runs. The heat didn’t stay on for all that long of a time, but long enough to melt down exposed thin aluminum and all the fragile materials..the fire department was here pretty quick.
