So naturally I read all the negative reviews about HD's hidden antenna kit after I order one and turn the bike in for some parts to be installed. Is it really that shitty? And if so, what is the alternative besides going with a shorty?

Not sure where the shitty reviews are coming from. But I installed the HD hidden antenna kit and did not notice a difference in performance. AM channels have static, but I think it was the same as original, even my car radio has static on AM stations sometimes. I am happy with this kit.
The 17 CVO Street glide comes with the HD hidden antennae and I can tell you FM reception is poor at best if your out of the city. My 15 CVO Road Glide Ultra had a regular antennae and I could receive FM 3 times farther or more out of town.
Leaving the hidden as I use XM and my iPod most the time due to the crappy FM reception with the hidden HD atennae
Had a hidden antenna on last RG had very limited range. On my M8 I unbolted factory antenna from frame and ran it up under fender and up frame to where tip is near gas tank wire tied it tight works great and no ugly antenna
I think its a hit or mis.
I've had the HD hidden ant on my '13 UC, '15SGS, and now the '17 CVO. Always great FM reception everywhere. I'd tune to the radio when I'd loose cell signal when doing Pandora.
My 1st 2 bikes antenna was powered, the CVO isn't powered. Not sure why this one isn't, but it works. Only loss I noticed was the weather band on the '15. Stock ant I'd pick up 3 stations. The hidden ant only picked up 1. Not that it was a problem.
