Default Oil cooler protection on the cheap

I know we ride expensive bikes and spend tons of money on mods and upgrades, but who doesn't want to save a little coin now and again? One thing I didn't like about my new SGS is the oil cooler not having much protection. I'm sure Harley would say "oh well we put it behind the fender". Clearly the agree a it could use more, and will gladly sell you a protection cover kit. So I decided to do my own.

Materials used - Metal mesh sheet (gutter guard), Gorilla Glue, Tin Snips, Whatever other tools you decide you need.

I took the metal mesh and cut it to size. Then bent it to the shape I wanted. Once it was in shape I glued it to the existing plastic piece on the cooler. I would suggest using a good 2-part epoxy over the gorilla glue. Painted the screen and black and good to go.

Certainly it's not perfect, but the few flaws are only noticeable up close and personal. Spent 5 euro on the metal, and had to buy the tin snips for 8 euro.

awesome share, thanks! was going to buy the HD one until I noticed it doesn't fit my fan assist cooler..but this ingenuity puts me back in the game and is a good idea to have on there..I have noticed that the fender skirt on my RK keeps a lot more debris off the cooler than the fender that's on my wife's Freewheeler, which appears to be the same as the Street Glides, so think I'll do this to hers for starters

I agree with mjwebb, this was a great share. I'll be doing this very project and appreciate your step by step and advice on the 2 part epoxy. Thanks.

I like it too. What if we used black silicone caulk and heavier expanded metal

Silicone isn't really an adhesive. It's great for it purpose. But using as a glue for this application, I think there are better options.

I'm with you on a heavier metal.

Ya not sure silicone would hold up too long. It may adhere initially, but overtime would likely come loose. My options were fairly limited for the metal.

Did this awhile ago, found that small stones tend to get stuck in between the screen and cooling fins though.......

I have been meaning to do this. Have done it to my other two bikes with exposed radiators and/or oil coolers. I had a punctured radiator strand me 500 miles from home one time. Learned my lesson.

Question, is there an easy way to get the plastic cover off? I have not even tried, yet.

It really just pulls off. The rubber grommets will come out as well. Just take off the plastic piece and put them back on the bracket for later install
