If the proper amount of oil is in the primary would it spill out when the derby cover is removed, this is with bike on jiffy stand. Trans level is correct, bike had the 1k service done by dealer about 1800miles ago. I know about the problems with the trans oil transferring to primary and that's why I've been keeping a eye on it. but never checked primary till the other day. I know it should be checked upright but didn't expect some to come out when derby cover was pulled, my 2013 sg didn't do it.
Wonder if possibly over filled at service.
Yes the primary fluid will seap out if derby Cover removed on kickstand. Upright it won't if level correct. Some folks get someone else to sit on them upright while they open the derby Cover to prevent leakage.
what I have learned thru trial and error is that the initial fill of 30 oz is spot on..just touching the bottom of the clutch basket, can be added on the jiffy stand without overflowing..pretty close but no prob..I put a 2X4 and shim under the jiffy and it is completely upright when I drain and add, 'loosen' and tighten the Derby cover before and after the drain and refill..I changed mine a couple times and settled on the factory spec..trans takes ~30 oz as well to reach Full
I've never check one that close but I did fill one to the proper level then put it on the jiffy stand and nothing came out. That said, drain yours and measure what comes out. They typically only want about 28 oz as you cannot get it all out from the drain hole. When level you only want it to touch the bottom of the clutch basket. If you get more than that out the drain it was over filled or you have transfer happening.
I fill upright to the bottom of the pressure plate. when I drain it its on the jiffy stand and I crack the cover before pulling the plug. I would say yours was overfull because none runs out of mine when I crack the cover.
Thanks for replies, don't think it's transferring cause trans level has stayed constant.
Did drain it and 30oz came out , put 28 back in it just touches bottom of clutch. Will being keeping an eye on it till next serv at 5k.
I just did my 1,000 oil service yesterday. The key is to have the bike upright, not on the Jiffy Stand. 28 measured ounces in the Primary is just right where it needs to be, some metal shavings on the magnetic plugs (all three) which is to be expected on any new engine from any maker. I had 6 quarts of Mobil 1 20w-50 for all three holes and it was not quite enough, you really need to buy 7 quarts when you do the service yourself, and you have a couple of ounces left over on the last bottle.
Primary won't use any oil unless its leaking, really no need to check on it.
