Default Twin-Cooled Engine Heat

Noob here. Sorry if this has been covered already. I ride a non-HD brand that has a liquid cooled engine. I want to switch to riding an Ultra Limited. What's the truth about the amount of heat felt from the engine? Asking because the dealer salesguy says it's "no problem".

Thanks in advance.

Are you overly sensitive to some heat? What I mean is....millions....ok well hundreds of thousands of harley riders ride their bikes daily and have no problem with any heat they might feel.

Also, living in Wis, you dont see many, if any days in triple digits with high humidity.

As six said, Go test ride one for several miles to get the heat up. Its not unbearable. And once you can, decat the headers and it will be significantly less heat anyway.

Our crotch coolers will help protect you from the felt heat .. The owners of the new models are still buying our product as well as people with fans installed etc.. Some can deal with the heat and some rather not .. If you have any questions about our products just let us know ..

I am concerned about it. I owned a Victory for a couple of years and the heat was intolerable. And so was the heat when I demo'd an Indian. I'll ride a HD, of course, but am looking for some owner feedback, especially about the benefit/cost of removing the cat.

I do live n Wisconsin, true, but travel two-up throughout the lower 48, Canada, and Alaska during riding season, so I'll be in hot weather at times.

I too own a Victory X1, so I know exactly what you are talking about. On my 2017 HD RKS, it is air/oil cooled only and the "heat" from it is almost nothing compared to the Vic. I agree, the Vic's on hot days can be a bit of a pain to ride but no HD I have ever ridden is anywhere near that level of heat you get off the Vic's. As said, go test ride. I think you will be happy.

Gotcha. Honestly, I rode much of last summer around my town in shorts. I was hot against my right leg, but I was able to stand it. Anxious to see how much cooler it runs with the new headers and all this year.

Coming from a Honda to an HD, I can say that the heat CAN be significant, but MOSTLY when stuck in stop and go traffic. Most of the time, I don't notice the heat, at least until I stop or get off the bike. However, once I was stuck in slow moving, stop and go traffic, after a fairly long ride, and the heat was almost unbearable. I felt like the inside of my right thigh was on fire! My wife on the back could also feel the heat. Once we got moving again, it wasn't as bad, but it was still quite warm. There are products, though, like Captain Itch's crotch coolers, or other heat deflectors, that will help block SOME of the heat, but it can't eliminate ALL of it. I've heard rave reviews of the Love Jugs, which are a couple of fans mounted on the side to blow air over the cylinders, and those are SUPPOSED to cool them down quite a bit, but I haven't tried them myself, mostly due to the price. Not everyone can afford a couple hundred extra just to keep the bike running cooler. There are also other methods to try to keep the bike cooler, like oil coolers mounted to the lower downtubes in front, which will also help cool the engine. Everything, though, except for the oil cooler, relies on air MOVING over the cylinders to cool the engine, though the Love Jugs will do so while the bike is sitting still in traffic. The choice is up to you, but having owned both, I would NOT get rid of my HD in favor of the Honda or other metric bike. TONS more power and torque, and a much larger community to get information and parts from, with INFINITELY more experienced riders to gain knowledge from, make the HD hands down better, though it will be more expensive, on almost ALL fronts. They don't say HD stands for Hundred Dollar for nothing!!

With the Ultra Limited you'll feel standard warmth/heat behind the lower fairings, but no intense thigh cooking heat in the saddle - not even in traffic. Twin-cooling works very, very well.
