Any type of cooling of the motor is going to affect both the protection of the motor as well as rider comfort. Some are more geared to comfort, some are more for the engine. However, I hated how often EITMS activated all the time, so I installed the oil cooler fan and disabled EITMS. Oil temps barely get over 230 now at the hottest, and I have seen my oil temps drop on a hot day while at idle, from about 200 to 190 after running 35mph and coming to a traffic light.
Bottom line, if you have any concerns with oil temp or EITMS, get the oil cooler fan before anything else.

agree, valuable accessory, allows us to have confidence in conventional engine oil knowing it's not getting overly abused by extreme temps
I run synthetic and still swear by the fan assisted cooler. It really ticks me off that the M8 bikes don't come with it standard.
yup, the fact they made one for the first time for the M8 implies to me, they believe they will benefit from it, or even need it, especially since it's OEM for Freewheeler and Police model..but we know the drill...all about getting those extra $$$$
I had thought it was to help protect the motor. Maybe it does both. I kept it on all the time on my 2016, and can't remember it helping much with how much heat cooked our right legs on a 100 degree day. It was fierce.
The M8 gets nice and hot, too, but not like the 103. That 103 would heat right thigh to the threshold of agony.
yes, its sole purpose as stated by HD is rider comfort.
Hey group, quick question. I have a 2017 Ultra Limited... went out for a good 2hr ride this afternoon. As I was near the end of my ride, I was sitting at a stop light and my idle started to drop like it was running out of fuel. In order to keep it from dying I had to give a little throttle to keep her going. I made it home and I let her idle in the driveway for about 5 min and the idle was fine, maybe a little choppy but she's a Harley. Could this be the EITMS kicking on? I'm not sure what it feels like when it does. I thought I had bad fuel... thanks!

EITMS engaged raises idle rpm ...... sounds like you are completely unfamiliar with your EITMS so please read your Owner's Manual about its operation .. if you don't have an OM you can enter your VIN on the HD site and view your OM online

I know it's already been answered, but I'll add that when EITMS kicks in, the best way I can describe it is that it feels very less harley-ish. Idle goes up a bit, and it becomes very smooth and consistent. No potato-potato, just a continuous thump-thump

Go to the "Info" screen on your head unit, it will show you if it is "Enabled" or "Disabled", and if you're at a stop light and it is doing its thing it will show "Active". Page 185 of your user's manual...
