My brother had the sumping issue on his 17 cvo stage 4. Took it to the dealer and they could not replicate the problem. Any suggestions?
He needs to go out riding for an hr or 2. Get it to the point of sumping while hes on the way to the dealer. Let them follow the guidance in SB1450 and they should be able to make a REAL determination if its sumping.
Sorry to hear of your troubles. Youre not alone. Thats a PERFECT description of the onset of sumping in a bike. It creeps up gradually and all of a sudden.... no power, no throttle responsiveness, lots of heat, the smell of burning oil. Classic symptoms of engine sumping. Also the hrs of riding and load conditions needed before sumping began.
Ive been through 4 engines in my 17 CVO Limited and Im afraid you have a long psth ahead. First an oil pump update. Then if it still sumps, they will offer lab-matched and blue printed cylinders and pistons. If it still sumps then FINALLY they will offer you a new 2019 engine that resolves sumping.
Unfortunately the real question is whether you have enough time to go through all these steps before your factory warranty expires???? It takes miles and hours to induce sumping but if you dont induce sumping while youre under warranty, than that final step to replace the engine will be on your nickel.
My recommendation is to convince your HD shop to push the MoCo to pay to pull the jugs and pistons for an inspection. (If you had to ride a long distance while sumped that might help to get the inspection authorized). If the rods and crank have even a slight tightness (burned bearings), and the mechanic reports that tightness to the Warranty dept, he should get authorization for a replacement engine.
Thats the best and fastest path to resolve the issue. All the other steps they propose will be bandaids that only burn time off your warranty.
The good news is I have the 2 years from Harley (One year left) plus 5 years from First extended Corporation. My dealer said he would load it on the DYNO and push it hard to get it to sump. So reading here I should be asking for a verification of what pump is in it, then a tear down of the motor for inspection.
Thank you guys for the fast responses

So ride it for hours, get it super hot and then go to dealer. They would have to do the test while its super hot, right? if it sits and cools then the oil will be back where its supposed to be, right?

Not exactly. A hot engine that has just sumped can be returned to a somewhat normal status by letting it idle for awhile. The idling will allow the oil pump to catch up by scavaging the oil out of the crankcase back to the oil pan where it belongs. Thats why its difficult for a dealer to replicate. Very hard to cause sumping on a dyno. It takes an hr or more of riding on a highway or twisties to induce sumping. The only other way is for an engine failure.
Better to identify sumping yourself. Get it to the dealer. Shut it down while hot at the dealer snd let them follow SB1450.
Some have suggested to keep riding while it's sumping until it self destructs. Can this really be done ?
Probably not a good idea to ride a sumping bike till it self destructs. But gently nursing a sumping bike to a dealer where they can properly evaluate the bike while it is sumping is probably the best approach.
I have a friend with an 18 CVO SG and had similar symptoms. First he noticed it was losing power. Pulled over and checked the oil and there was none on the dipstick so we assumed it was sumping. It was in the crankcase. Long story short, the dealer was thinking it was sumping and as they were going through the process, found that there were metal shavings left in it from the manufacturing process and those clogged the oil return passages. Currently waiting on new engine along with anything else engine oil flowed through.
