Got a call from the dealer today. They said the cam sensor melted and thats what shut the bike down. Service guy said they replaced it and fired the bike up. While replacing it they found 28 oz of oil when the sensor was removed. For some reason i thought the oil migrated back to the pan when the bike was shut down and allowed to cool??? Dealer said bike sounded fine. Leak down and compression was fine. So it looks like I get a new pump, new rockers (???) and some other assorted bearings and they are going to send it. He assured me they would go ride it hard before I got it back to verify it is fixed. I told him I would be running very hard fro quite some time before I trust it. Oh Well, i have 7 years of warranty, so i guess time will tell. I'm not super happy about the part of fixing it as opposed to replacing it.

I think you mean crank sensor. AFAIK, M8 don't have a cam sensor. Crank sensor mounted on bottom of motor.

Never thought you were crazy, just never heard of this before. Like I said before I think this dealer is up to date on this situation and you're in pretty good hands.

Are all M8's experiencing the sumping issue? I bought a new '18 Ultra Limited back in April before I heard about this problem. Now, I'm worried that I should have waited for the '19's to come out. Not long after I bought the bike I took a 1500 mile trip that had long periods of highway riding and I never experienced any power loss or any other symptoms that made me think something was wrong with the bike. Can I assume I'm going to get lucky and not have to deal with this problem?

Yep, just enjoy your ride. You will hear of some sumping 4 motors, then claiming they changed the case in 2019 which fixed it. This is totally unproven to my knowledge, and still until today they use the same case by part number.

Where I do believe they had an issue with the first M8, I just took my 2018 CVO limited to Tennessee, and ran it hard, very hard through the tail of the dragon. I am telling you I pushed it up hill high RPM and used high engine braking as it applied. It was close to 90 degree and the engine got hot but I had no issues. Power was all there. When I stopped at deals gap, the fans stayed on longer than I've ever experienced telling me I pushed her hard. But again, no issues.

As MJ said, Enjoy your ride!

HD has issued a bulletin that says all M8s may sump, but only a very few have done so. I ride the pee out of mine, mostly two-up, in high heat and demanding traffic. It runs and runs. I've stopped worrying about it. If it sumps, I will ride it to the dealer and let them fix it. I doubt it will. Mine isn't transferring oil from tranny to primary, either. But I'm keeping an eye on it.

Sorry the written word leaves a lot to be desired. I didn't take offense to it at all.
