Okay been looking through the threads on sumping. I will admit up front that I am not mechanically inclined, but can someone explain very simply what sumping is? Not the effects, but what is happening..... You have engine oil, transmission oil and oil in the primary. Is it oil migrating from the engine to the transmission or engine to primary or something else? I checked my engine oil and it was 5-6 ounces low after about 2K miles after last service. Yes people are sick of this topic, just trying to understand.

the Sump in most engines is at the bottom of the engine more commonly known as the oil pan. In some cars and motorcycles, such as ours, we have what is called a dry sump, which in a nutshell means that the oil pan is relocated elsewhere than the bottom of the engine among other things allowing the engine to sit lower to the ground to keep CG more favorable. Their are other benefits FYI, but in a nut shell the bottom of the engine is kept clear of excess oil by the oil pump that pushes the oil to the oil tank, at the same time as it pulls oil from the tank to give to the rest of the engine. In the cases where these bikes sump it means for whatever reason the oil is pooling in the bottom of the crankcase where there is not enough space for it to be pooled up without being in the way, it is getting hot and frothy from the crank whipping around and is causing interference robbing power and causing damage.
There is more to it, but that is a down and dirty.

Thanks. So just to be clear (for me) it means there is too much oil in the crankcase (which is the transmission). If the transmission level is normal there should be no issue. Is this correct? Don't shoot me for not knowing all the right terms.

i don't think the transmission has anything to do with this sumping issue...
