Adding oil to a Harley is not brain surgery people. First, RTFM. Then whatever you do, do not overthink what you just read. Do it by the numbers if you have to. If you still can not figure it out you should probably sell the motorcycle and get a bicycle that does not need oil.

Let it idle upright? Where does it say that in the owner"s manual?

Just stick with what's in the manual.

uhm, under Check Engine Oil..LOL
  1. Oil level can be checked with motorcycle upright or on jiffy stand. Both marks are on the same side of the dipstick. Carefully read dipstick when checking oil level.
what Stonecold pointed out IIRC is that the M8 oil pump scavenger port is on the high side when on the Jiffy Stand so letting it idle upright allows for more complete scavenging back to the tank where the dipstick reading will reflect that...it's easier to do the Jiffy stand check and just remember before adding any there's a little bit more left behind to compensate for..not really a big diff though...my wife's Freewheeler takes any guess work out of it !

...this is so much simpler on a trike, since it's always "upright"(that is unless you tipped it completely on it's side, then you'll have other issues to deal with).

...now back to the regularly scheduled bickering(or info swapping).

I'm not sure why your oil is red. What oil are you using?
