Default 2019 RGS - Transmission to Primary Transfer

I bought my 2019 RGS in October 2018. I was aware of the possible transfer issue, so checked the transmission often during the first 1000 miles. Added quite a bit and it kept getting lower. So between the 1000 mile and 5000 mile service, I just let it do what it was going to do. The amount transferred was just enough to barely touch the bottom of the stick. Hoped maybe my transfer issue had stopped.

Earlier this month I was preparing for a 6000 mile ride from Phoenix, AZ to San Diego, CA to Charlotte, NC and back to Phoenix, AZ. Changed the fluids. To not waste a few ounces of oils, I re-filled the primary and transmission with a full quart each. Then took off on my ride. I checked the transmission fluid at about the 3000 mile mark, it wasn't reading on the stick at all. So I used the arm on my reading glasses. Stuck the whole arm down and the fluid went about 1/2" on to the arm. Quite a bit had transferred.

Anyway, when I returned home I ordered a clutch rod from Macomb County Choppers. I received the rod a couple days ago so...

Since I knew there had been quite a bit of transfer, I decided to change the fluids and install the rod today. I measured how much fluid I drained from the Transmission and Primary.
  • Transmission - 8 oz
  • Primary - 56 oz
Right now I have 12,000 miles on the bike. I again refilled the primary and transmission with 1 quart each. I ride my bike to work as well as take it out on most weekends. The minimum miles I put on each week is 250. This weekend the wife and I are going on a ride so will put on an additional 500.

I will add to this post, the mileage I have covered since this service and report if the transmission is holding steady or not.

This bites. I'm so done crossing my fingers that I won't sump or transfer. I have 900 miles on my bike (2019 RGS) and am afraid on what I'll find when I do the 1000 miles service. HD needs to nip this **** in the butt like yesterday. Some have had their warranties denied because of aftermarket parts that have nothing to do with their sumping or oil migration and that's not right.

I'm getting a 19 limited in June. Reading all this sumping and transfer issues has me scared spotless. I'm not going to do anything to the bike for fear of voiding the warranty. With all the denials I'm reading my question is does the dealer have to perform the services or am I still allowed to change my fluids?
Because what I've also read is dealers just drain, they dont measure what's coming out.

without knowing your circumstances and reasons for pulling the trigger on one soon (great deals, colors, etc.) I'd consider waiting a couple of months for perhaps no other reason than it'll be a more mature M8..it would seem natural that they would eventually learn from the early ones and make some behind the scenes updates rather than publish and advertise fixes to known problems...I suppose there's a chance they roll out the same thing though. The TC had a looooong run and it obviously matured throughout with modifications along the way..it's a crapshoot though I guess

The new venting kit HD has out may fix the issue. It appears you have to go through documenting the transfer problem a couple times before they will order it from HD. There are reports that the vent did not fix it, so there's that.

For those either not worried about warranty or those that have dealers that are willing to install the fat pushrod, that is the route I would go with.

Good luck either way. If HD can't fix it, I would go aftermarket personally.

You can change your fluids and be fine with warranty.

Note that if you change your own fluids and the tranny is low, they will not be able to document it since they did not service it. I advise running the bike several hundred miles, checking the level and if it is low, bring it in to document it. That's the only way you would get on the list for the vent "fix".

Just make sure you use HD fluids. And HD air for your tires. Along with HD gasoline and HD certified intake air supply. Make sure you ride only wearing HD clothing. Then you should be good
