I did exactly what you are thinking on my 2018 FLTRXS. Cutting off top tabs and mounting tabs on stock cooler and installing the modified fan assisted unit took about an hour. Sorry but no pics but it has been working well for a year. Good luck.

Just figured I didn't need to have two oil coolers. Pretty simple process, remove the factory oil cooler, cut off the tabs for mounting and Snap-on the fan. Touched up paint where I cut off the tabs. Reinstall oil cooler with two new clamps on the bottom of the hoses only and plug in.
Had the dealer turn on the option 4 fan. Not really a flash, just like turning on speakers or turning on lights on brights and stuff.
i.e. The mounting tabs on the non-fan oil cooler are in the way of the fan shroud. The fan-assisted oil cooler moves the mounting tabs from the oil cooler to the fan shroud (meaning the oil cooler itself does not need mounting tabs).
