117 SE CVO Question

Default 117 SE CVO Question

My 2019 117 runs great, it runs so good unless something broke, I'll probably leave it alone...but that doesn't stop one from dreaming. I have a couple of questions for the builders and tuners...

SE HEADS? What's the deal with SE heads? How are they different and what makes them better than the basic heads?

Intake? Does the 117 already have the 64mm intake?

SE 117 CVO cam? What is it exactly? Is it different than say the 114?
What is it similar to, both MoCo and aftermarket?
Will a stock 117 respond well to just a cam upgrade and professional dynotune and a TTS (say leaving the stock exhaust)?

Cam Tools...Will the cam tools for a twin cam work on a M8? I have the full set of cam tools from the job on a 2014 FLHTK...

Lastly, How much did MoCo leave on the table with the 117 if anything?

Start by saying I'm no expert and cant speak on most of this but will offer what I know on the bold section. I spoke with HD mothership directly on the cam question and they referred to it as a "high performance cam" it is different from the 114 and while it's not the same part number as the SE 447 torque cam, they said it is so close that a stage 2 torque cam is not even offered on 2018+ cvo 117', that is also confirmed in the SE parts catalog in small print. As far as how it responds to a cam change, I picked up 23hp and around 20 ft lbs of torque with a drop in cam and good dyno tune so in my opinion it responds quite well. Made it feel like a different bike and added a very big bump in exhaust sound as well. I love it and would not hesitate to do it again. Good luck to you sir!

Speaking to the cam tools, You can remove the cam bearing with your Twin Cam puller, but you need the installer designed for the M8

I'm not sure, but I would say the CVO doesn't come with SE heads. The SE heads that come in the Stage III & IV kits have bigger valves, smaller ports, and springs that are stronger (not necessary) and allow for a cam lift of .500 or greater.

No, it comes with the 55mm, which in its mild state of tune should be fine. There are quite a few members with 124" kits that are still running the 55mm.

I can't answer this exactly. I have been told that it is different than the stock cam. I've heard that it is in between stock and the SE torque cam.
Yes, it will respond well to a cam upgrade and dynotune. Removing the cat will help slightly, but not significantly. Mostly cuts down on heat.

I don't know what brand of tools you have, but George's Garage sells a new plate separately for pushing the new bearing in. Other than the plate, everything else is the same.

Lastly, How much did MoCo leave on the table with the 117 if anything?
Well, it has 10.2:1 compession, where the regular '18 and up114" (not the SE upgrade or the '17 CVO) has 10.5:1. So I guess they could have given it more compression. You can get 10.5:1 by changing the head gasket to a .030. Not sure it would be worth the time or the money.

so question, just out of curiosity...doesn't sound like the 117 is really much of an advantage over the 114 in stock form anyway...

114 they list as 123 ft lbs of torque at 3000 rpms
117 they list as 125 ft lbs of torque at 3500 rpms

the 114 has higher compression, but guessing the 117 has a few more HP ..makes me wonder if there's any real world seat of the pants difference and they only replaced the 114 with the 117 in CVOs to show they are bigger and better for the most expensive bike they offer..I'm probably missing little details that make it better but what are they...???

Having ridden a new 114 and obviously my new 117, when it was stock, I can say there was definitely a seat of the pants difference in the two.

ok, thx..does the "Having ridden a new 114" mean test ride, it wasn't broken in and you didn't wring it out, compared to you wringing out your personal broken in 117? just want to know if it was an apples to apples comparison..if the 117 only is rated 2 peak ft lbs of torque more, and at 500 higher rpms...that to me makes the 114 preferable..on paper anyway,,if the 117 makes a few more hp near redline, to me that's not a big benefit..don't mean to get into analysis paralysis here just trying to get a accurate real world assessment...i gotta' say, my stock 114 in the lighter RGS model and being a solo rider, the smooth linear power band pulls strong through all the gears to 4500 rpms is very useful and seems perfectly suited for touring...got 2600 miles on it so long ago broken in and push it to its limits about once every outing..by 4500 rpms its given the best of what is has to offer, but running hard through the gears to 4500 gets you going quickly and crushing speed limits..very impressed with this stock offering..obviously the 117 will do all that and then some, but it must be difference in the sum of all parts and tweaks cuz I'd never be able to tell the difference of 2 more ft lbs of tq..they probably could have left the 114 in CVOs with a few tweaks and be good, but then they'd sell less because it wasn't bigger and better than the lesser models..LOL

When I bought my new cvo sg the salesman begged me to also ride a new cvo road glide that they had in the back because he was such a fan of the rg. While they were getting that ready we rolled a new 2019 rgs out so I could ride that as well. So both 117's were new off the floor as was the new 114. Dont get me wrong, it was not a blow me away difference but I could absolutely feel the difference. I did not wring the neck of any of them but I did run them up through the gears pretty good a couple of times.

The 107 and 114 all use the same camshaft the CVO 117 has a upgrades cam

Depends on who's tools as the cam bearing itself is the same as the TC bearing

Here is a 2020 CVO with a Fullsac exhaust and a TTS 175 camshaft with Tune, no other parts. A typical CVO 117 makes about 102 Ft Lbs and 93 Hp

Steve it’s not right to tease people! They’re going to get all excited about this cam and then when they go to mastertune.net it’s not there!
