Are pushrods absolutely necessary

I had a 95CI kit put in years ago. The mechanic installed the adjustable pushrods and somewhere in Minnesota one of them bent. I rattled all the way back to Michigan. A different mechanic at the dealership called and asked if I had my old pushrods. He reinstalled the solid stock pushrods which were the correct length.
