I was jonesing for the Ventilator AC for awhile because of the look, plus I’m now running no cat, and free-er flowing exhaust, with a tune, but I put it off because I didn’t like the idea of screwing with a rain sock if necessary. There was another thread here I stumbled into a few weeks back. Not sure how old it was, but the consensus amongst those running the Ventilator was that it wasn’t too sensitive to moisture unless it was just excessive.

So I put one on, but can’t speak from much experience. I also installed a DK Custom breather kit to vent the crank case fumes and crud to a filter I routed under the oil cooler shroud.

I believe that those that worry about rain intrusion are worrying about a problem that doesn't exist. I've ridden at freeway speeds in driving rainstorms with my SE Wedge, which is open in front, without issue. I don't know if they even make a rain sock for that AC. My wife rode her 21 Heritage (OE Ventilator) in a driving rainstorm with no issues. I only put the rain sock on hers when it was parked in the rain. Rain isn't new to motorcycles.

Too bad you don't live closer. I'll be removing the stock ventilator off my 21 cvo trike and putting on the extreme version.
Take off could have been yours.

I've got the extreme on mine and no issues so far, even when I'm caught in a downpour.

That's very generous. I'm sure you could make a local sale for a couple hundred bucks, they're just north of $300 from the dealer.

I love the Ventilator style and have been running them for a long while - cause I have short legs or something.
I ran the older twin cam version for years on my 07, 09, 10, and 14 and those did suffer in an extremely heavy rain - mostly on the batwings, but it did happen occasionally on my Road glides now and then.
I guess my batwings directed air/water right to the air cleaner more than my RGs.

Anyway, for those who have never experienced it, you know it's soaked and sucking water when you're incrementally (and unconsciously) giving it more and more throttle to maintain speed.
Then suddenly the bike will miss hard (no combustion) - for like a long 2-3 seconds until the engine suddenly lights off again but now you're doing 40 instead of 60.

Never a problem scooting around town, but I've run into it mostly on long runs in the middle of nowhere and I'd happen to run into a storm on a road with no over passes or convenient places to stop etc - just pushed through.
I learned to put the rain sock on when in those situations and everything would be fine.

So that brings me to my 17 and it's newer ventilator. I've been in a few downpours and never had this problem and I don't even own a rain sock for it. Go figure.

we do a fair amount of long out of town overnighters..sometimes it rains and we can't always park under cover..the rain sock is a good idea to keep handy, otherwise a plastic bag at least..had to do this for both the Heavy Breather and Ventilator....now we have those outdoor bike covers and although they pack away fairly small, on long trips where storage room is important they don't make it on many of our trips

New to the ventilator ac that came on my 22 gilde, but are these already considered to have a high flow air filter or can one swap out for a K&N filter or would that be a waste of money? thanks

overkill unless you are upgrading to performance stage kits because they have more surface area and are more porous allowing more air to pass through (and airborne contaminants)....you can get an idea by just looking at the HD SE online store parts under the details and instructions tab ..tells you what's required for which components..I think the only reason you might want to swap out the stock paper is because you like the more permanent reusable function of the oiled cotton fiber elements...but, you'll notice that the instructions state when using the hi flow filters an ECM recalibration is required using the SE Pro Street Tuner, so if you go that route you might as well put more free flowing mufflers on and complete the Stage 1..otherwise just leave it TF alone, as is, ride and enjoy
