I agree with this after seeing the build up on pistons with 5000 miles on them. Steve coles suggestion is what it probably needs. Poke a camera down in there and you might be surprised what you see. Good luck

Another thing I've had happen is a small bit of carbon that's 'sharp' or 'pointed' can heat up to the point that it acts like a glow plug. I cleared this up once with a plug change. I also used to de-carbon my car engines (back in the 60's when they ran like crap) by holding the carb open on a high idle and dribbling a bit of water into the engine. It would flash to steam and break up the carbon deposits. Not sure I would want to do this on my super clean runnning M8 though.... Fresh plugs and some runs to redline seem worth a try.
