Default Blown head gasket-confirmed. What else should be looked at?

Hey guys. Wound up finally finding an indy that could get the bike in, and they were able to confirm that the head gasket on my 17 RKS did give way. So, now its time to get her fixed up. He recommended using Cometic gaskets, and I think he mentioned replacing the head bolts with either Fueling or S&S. He of course also mentioned that while it was open, if I ever wanted to bore it out, the time is now. I toyed with the idea briefly, but I really don't want to drop a ton more for something that I don't really care about. However, I am wondering if I should at least change the cams. It currently has a stage 1, and I do have a powervision that I still have, I just think I would need to repurchase the license for.

What else should be looked at while he is in there? Anything else that should be done since the case is open? Again, I am not looking at spending 3k+ on revamping the motor, but if there is something else I really SHOULD do while he's in there, I'd love to hear it. I am going to research cams here a little bit, but ideally, if I were to do it, I think a torque cam over the HP cam would be better for my style of riding. 2up 40-50 percent of the time, and usually shifting before 4k. But I will keep reading on that.

Your is a '17. Now would be a great time to get the latest '20 oil pump revision in--unless you already had that done.

There is only one camshaft. Yes, you would be a happy man with an aftermarket cam, new style oil pump, and a PowerVision tune.

Yep. Fat fingered that. Sounds like the pump is a definite that I need to do. And the cam is very intriguing. I will know more tomorrow when I get some pricing. Thanks so far!

The pump and cam are in different areas of the motor. The only advantage doing it with the heads off is that they can use solid push rods instead of adjustable ones.

What your shop is looking out for you by mentioning big bore; heads are already off so replacing pistons and cylinders is never going to be cheaper than now. He doesn’t need to touch the cam/pump area to replace the head gaskets.

If the powervision is the one you used for Stage1 on the bike its license is still good. Cometic gaskets are my "go to" and used them for years. I would defiantly upgrade the oil pump, lifters and replace that plastic intake manifold.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. He is going to give me a ring today, so I will talk with him about it.

The powervision was used for my old sportster. Any idea if I would need a new cable to hook to the ECM?

You might need this cable https://www.fuelmotousa.com/i-209219...ble-6-pin.html

You probably have the 4 pin cable now if it was used on the Sporty in your signature
