I get using a bit of oil, and most auto manufacturers will go out to as far as 1qt/1k miles on multi cylinder engines, which even then I feel is unacceptable. We’ve been making ICE for over a hundred years. No reason to be using that much oil. Notwithstanding having only two cylinders to do this. Sure, my hogs have always had to have some added between changes, but 1gt/1500, something is getting torn down and resealed. Hell, no use in changing oil for that amount of usage!

I keep all my Harleys oil level just a little over midway, I don't fill to the full mark. They don't ues much oil and I get very little oil on my air filter. Been working out good for me since 2000. We now have a 21,, 20,, and a 14, with 72.000 miles on it, that one uses a little more oil, around 10 oz to 1000 miles now. She still runs great.

Any of you install the Trask CheckM8 breather? Reduces carryover oil mist.

Many of us have the Trask CheckM8. There are quite a few threads and posts, if you do a search.

My bike looses a few oz of oil every few thousand miles ever since I installed the 2021 oil pump, and Trask CheckM8.
A few days ago, at 9200miles, bike was slightly low after pulling it out of its almost winter sleep, and I had to put 4oz into it.
Not exactly concerned about oil loss.

Let me be clearer - I'm speaking in the context of this thread only to those having this problem - not in general to all members.

Now answer.

Kinda tells us you aren't changing your own oil to monitor what goes in vs. what comes out. My 2014 2trfe uses some oil over the OIC, well less than half a quart, but does use some oil so toyotas aren't exactly immune.

OP, my 2022 FLHT was down a bit before the first service as well. I just chalked it up to break in. The tech you talked to said it was down a quart, but that might just have been what was added. Mine came from dealer set at halfway point on the dipstick, and dropped to sightly above the fill level before the first service so I threw in some oil just to cover that. Was relatively steady at the 5k service, I didn't need to add anything in between.

yeah, that would make no sense, especially when dealership coupons for synthetic oil change, multi point inspection and tire rotation are under $100, once a year since I only drive about 6000 miles annually..and I wait there for an hour or so...I put ~20,000 miles annually on my Road Glide so DIY that for obvious reasons

Okay, story time (short story):

I had my dealer do one of the early services, I think 5K. A thousand or so miles down the road I checked the oil and it was a quart low. A thousand miles, and using a quart?!?! I was displeased, but learned that Harley considers this "normal". Sheesh. Started carrying a quart in my tank bag.

Next service, they wheeled it out and declared it "ready to go." Before taking possession of the bike, I checked the dipstick. Not a drop on it. Not. A. Drop. I visited the service desk and unleashed a thermonuclear explosion. Long story short, the technician demonstrated that there was some oil in it, about 4 quarts, so it wasn't bare, but, see, he fills it up while it's on the lift, where the bike's level. So when I check it on the sidestand, now that the bike's leaning, it's showing low. So, no problem, right, we'll just add a quart and we're all friends and everything will be happy...

I guess it's too hard to count the difference between 4 and 5?

Bastards.

Guess how much oil my bike has "used" in the last 30,000 miles? Not a drop. Gotta check what goes in and what comes out to know if it's actually using anything, and if you're not changing your own oil, you gotta check to see if the "certified technician" actually bothered to even fill it.

Oh, I get that and didn't mean to come off as disparaging the hands off to the car maintenance. Just was a lead in to saying it probably does use a bit of oil, it's just not noticeable unless you set the level and check before draining.
