Oh, I get that and didn't mean to come off as disparaging the hands off to the car maintenance. Just was a lead in to saying it probably does use a bit of oil, it's just not noticeable unless you set the level and check before draining.
o prob, but it never so much as used an eye dropper of oil..I have always checked oil regularly on my vehicles but gave up on my Toyota because it never budged at all from Full mark
Personally, I'd like to see some oil being used between oil changes. Not much, say a pint every 5000 miles. That way I'd hope that there is enough crosshatch for the rings to have some oil to keep them lubed and it's not to much leaking past the guides..
All it takes is a sloppy tech doing the change. The book calls for 4 quarts initial fill and then topping off. If they were in a hurry to get done and forgot the top off, it could easily be near a quart low. Total capacity w/filter is 5.2q

Also forgot to add: if you check oil level when bike is upright (like on a lift) the dipstick oil level reads much higher on the dipstick then when on the side (jiffy) stand - where its supposed to be checked.

The dipstick on M8s has a scale for regular bikes and one for trikes. Why can't the trike scale be used when on the rack?

Probably because having two different scales on the same dipstick would be too confusing for some owners.
Edit: sorry, i responded too quickly. You are saying the same stick is used for both styles? I never noticed. I use one of the temp dipsticks which has only one scale. I guess you could, as long as there aren't any other geometry issues?
Run it a few days and pull the CPS.
Let the oil run into a measuring cup. See how many ounces you have in the sump.
No reason for doing this, the op doesn`t have any idea what the oil level was when he got the bike, but he was quick to start a rant about the oil being low...
Here`s a tip for the op and any other people new to motor vehicles:
Check the oil yourself...
