Ok, it's been awhile since I posted here and am about to drive 12 hours to a dealer that has a few bikes I want. The one that really stands out is a 2018 Street glide special with all the add on I want already done, 16" apes, CVO seat, extended bags, Vance Hines exhaust, LED head light, extended and lowered floorboard brackets and some other add on as well.
I've always had 96" and 103" twin cams and never had any issues. After reading aboit this engine and year im worried and probably shouldn't be but I don't want issues on a new bike.
They said it doesn't have the vent in the primary but they will put it in for free. Sales guy said he's not sure about the oil pump and if anything was done but he's going to look into in on Monday and check with the tech. They sold the bike new and serviced it and took it on a trade. I'm worries about sumping, ive read all over the web and some say it's not a real common issue , some say steer clear of the engines from 17 to 20. It's winter up here in Canada so i can't ride it for awhile but I'd there any way yo see if this issue is happening?
bike had 31,000KM (19,000 miles) and from the pics and the dealer is mint condition.
I would not believe anything a dealer tells you. They are salesman , not your friend.
If it were me I’d find another bike. Being they did have sumping issues with that year M8, you better have cash to have the repairs done to it if it dose sump. And financing an extended warranty through Harley is not financially smart either. They will let you know what they will cover when it comes time to decide on the repair. You should make that decision. Anyone with money actual cash in the bank will be able to make any decision.
I’ve owned 5 M8 touring bikes, MY17-19. Of these two were a HD stage 2, one was a HD 131, the other two had no changes to the motor. At the time I was riding about 10k miles/year. The only issue I had on any of these was the ‘19 CVO SG 131, had a transfer issue from transmission to primary. Dealer added the vent and I rode the bike another 7k miles with no issues at all.
If you really like the bike and the deal is right, buy it. They are going to install the vent for free and I sure you can negotiate a good deal on replacement of the oil pump.

This ^^** totally agree and if extended warranty to cover any possible issue is a must, seek alternative options. Theyre out there. They cover anything, no questions.
A guy named Jim Palmer can assist in that.
I only know of one person that had sump issue and he was hot rodding his bike. My 2020 is at 36k and going strong.
I know not to trust the salesman that much, if at all. Basically using them for info since they serviced the bike they should have all records of what was done and what it has been in for, if it had been in for issues.
I have no issue paying for the upgraded pump if it hasn't been done before I buy it. They have ma y other street glides I like as well all the way up to 2022 but they are mostly stock with the same mileage on them. The upgrades I would need to do to them is far more expensive than a pump on the one I wasn't to look at.
Being 6'4" and having that stuff already done is a big plus for my and its a special and the others are not.
I may see if I can speak with one of the techs, it's a 12 hour drive so Its not like i can just go in and check all this stuff out.

if you get it and they do put a pump in I would make sure they put a new chain tensioner shoe on..only 19,000 miles on the OEM but while it's apart it's only ~$30 and labor should be nil

ok thanks, I will mention that if I get it. It's possible a pump was already done but I won't know for a day or 2.
The same dealer also has a 2014 street glide special with the 16"apes, full Rinehart system and a few other things, looks mint but has 92,000KM (57,000 miles) for $20,000cdn (14,700 usd). I think that mileage is a little high.
I bought a new 2018 Street Glide Special in Nov of 2017 and did buy the 7 year extended warranty because of the oil pump updating that HD was constantly doing after the 17's had sumping issues. I did do a stage 3,107 to 114 within the first 60 days of ownership so it was included in the warranty. As far as I know there was no change in the stock oil pump when the stage 3 was done. I don't think I ever sumped but at 42000 miles I had a catastrophic motor issue and supposedly a check valve in the oil pump was the culprit. HD did a new block, new stage 3, new heads. Basically an entire new engine and my cost was $100 or less. Warranty and HD would not allow me to pay the difference for a crate 131.
Think I'd consider some sort of extended warranty perhaps with an outside company should you decide to do some mods that wouldn't be covered under any HD warranty. Also the CVO style extended bags were stock on the 2018 SGS so if it has the full extended bags I'd wonder what happened to the CVO style bags.
