Pushrods and hydraulic lifters work great on low RPM engines. One of my favorite features of the "primitive" Sportster is its maintenance free valve gear. Low RPM is more relaxing and fun than 4 shrieking cylinders in every other situation than all out street racing. Love them push rods. No cam chains, no water pump, no cooling fan or thermostat, no shims or screw adjusters.. now if we could get the single carbs back all would be right with the world. The EPA said no so we have to deal with high pressure fuel pumps, computers and injectors. Using the choke never bothered me.

So mechanical lifters need some amount of lash to compensate for temperature expansion? I guess the lash gets tighter as the engine gets hotter? Is that why the exhaust lash is larger than the intake lash? Without the lash, the expansion may push the valve too deep into the cylinder?

So hydraulic lifters allow the valve to run on the cam lobe with 0 lash. As the engine get hot, the hydraulics compensate for the expansion?
If a valve hangs open it will burn up and there will be no compression. A hydraulic lifter doesn't have enough force to overcome the valve spring so the lifter itself can't hang the valve open.

Try adjusting the valves on a Ducati Desmodromic engine. Two shims per valve, one for the valve opener and one for the valve closer.
