Default Gen 2 M8 Cam

So has anyone been inside the cam chest of a non-VVT Gen2? I’d like to know what the difference is in the cam vs the Gen1. I see there is a cam sensor on the non-VVT however the service manual doesn’t give any detail on how the sensor fits onto the cam.

There is oil cooled, twin cooled and now center cooled.

What makes the center cooled so different to make it a gen 2?

Does HD identify the center cooled engine as Gen 2?

Steve Cole listed all the engine changes to the newest 117 and 121 engines which are numerous and significant compared to the 2017 - 2023 M8 engines of which were mostly unchanged. The Gen 2 M8 designation is not an official one as far as I am aware, likely just being called that due to having undergone its most significant changes since the M8 inception.

Edit: his post is in the 2024 forum if interested in reviewing his findings

"Thought I would share a little of the testing we have been doing on the new Center Cooled engines. These are new, with many changes from the previous version M8 engine that requires that we start over at the beginning and test everything, step by step, to find what works and what doesn't. The heads Air Cleaner and intake along with the camshafts are all new, so this may effect everything in the intake system of the engines. We currently have several bikes out on the road getting miles put on them so we are finishing up all new items design and tested on each of the new Center Cooled engines, 117, 121 ans 121 VVT models as they are all different than previous units."

as Paul Harvey would say..."and now for the rest of the story" .. the rest below

I installed a red shift 528 cam in my 24 RG. All the internals are the same ,with the exception of the inner cam bearing ,which is full compliment now. At the end of the cam there is a "wheel" for the cam sensor, that is held on by the cam retaining bolt. On the top end, the valve springs can handle more lift than the gen1 engines and come with 5.5g/sec fuel injectors.

This is the kind of information I was looking for. Also Moonshine Harley has done a Camshaft Shootout video, they ran some of the M8 cams already in existence as well as the SE 511 cam which performed very well.
