colorado trip recomendations
if you turn right out of walden it takes you to laramie in laramie you can head east on 210 towards cheyenne that takes you through Veedavoo (the devils playground) awesome natural rock formations. they say the gods were the ones who placed them in those formations. you have you see it to understand.
OR in steamboat west on 40 to craig. from thee you can stay west into maybell (small little hotel) the victory hotel. literally a house that was converted into a motel for hunters. nice owners (former geologist, rock hounds). go into dinosaur nat monument
that north west area of co is the high desert. i would suggest looking at different routs from steamboat to get to western wyowe took hwy 30 off I-80 and ran it all the way up 30-89-26
into jackson then into the tetons.
depending on how your gorup rides thats a good 2 dayer maybe 3 not incl turn around time. we went into idaho the back way into yellowstone.
another nice ride is 285 out of denver 285-50 (poncha sprgs) west to montrose south on 550 to durango east 160 @ pagosa sprgs take 84 into N.Mexico down to sante fe.
WARNING: that time of year is horendous for the more than occasional deer to venture out to say Hello. usually round 60-80 mph they hang out on blind turns or the frequent want to surprise you up off the shoulder. Between Sunste & Sunrise they own the hWY! 1 year we came across 12 deer wanting to say Hi to us at various times during our trip. one of the better ones was between craig and maybell 70ish mph this doe decides to jump onto 40 from the south side temp 85-90* she hits th epavement then looses her footing, starts sliding across the road, lucky we had enough view as she was disorientated and stood there not to sure which way she was going.
bobcowan has a really nice ride there. About the only thing I would change would be the 285 to 160 segment. Take 285 South out of Buena Vista and intersect hwy 50 at Poncha Springs (Just West of Salida). Go West towards Gunnison, over Monarch Pass and after about 40 miles total, you will intersect hwy 114. going South towards Saguache. Once you hit Saguache, you can head South to Monte Vista and intersect 160, or detour a little East and get back on 285 heading South. You can then still see the dunes or the 'gator' farm.
Gosh dang, its fun to live in Colorado....there's just too many neat places to see and roads to ride.
Good luck.
Hwy 24 thru Ute Pass (North Slope of Pikes Peak), over Wilkerson Pass through the valley, bang a right after Hartsel on Hwy 9 to Fairplay, bang a left and take the back route into Breakenridge. Nice ridin in Colorado. Have fun wherever you end up.
Once, while driving a car between Beuna Vista and Independence Pass, I drove through a heavysnow storm that was packed with strikes of lightning and loud thunder in early June. It was and is one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
