Rear Exhaust Bracket Issues (Long winded)
I have a 2015 RGS that I bought used (4300 miles) from Yellowstone HD last year on this date. I has stock motor with Vance& Hines Dresser duals and Rhineharts along with dino tune and SERT. I returned bike 3 days later because of a vibration issue starting at 4600 rpm. Of course they blew me off and told me it was the heat shields. A few days later I'm on my way to AZ from MT and at a rest stop I find the rear exhaust bracket hanging down from crossover pipe but no longer attached to rear case. I ride it to Twin falls HD and they tell me one of the 2- 3/16" allen heads bolts is sheared off into case. They replace the one bolt as they don't have time to extract sheared off bolt. AS I limp into phoenix this thing is vibrating so bad I think its coming apart. I nurse it to Buddy Stubbs HD on north end of town. Tech takes it out and tells me its normal. Wow is all I can say. I then take it to Arrowhead where the extract sheared bolt. I tell them I think system is bound up and creating vibration. That "fix" lasts till I get back home a few thousand miles later. I then find the rear exhaust bracket is broken, V&H sends me new bracket and I take it to my local indy to replace. He loosens exhaust and runs it at idle and believes left pipe is misaligned. All good for a while. Bike now has 24,000 miles on her and rear bracket bolts keep loosening up. Last time I removed them, blue locktight but I can't get torque wrench on with rear tire on. I use an allen wrench so get them as tight as I can 2 weeks ago. Yesterday I'm checking heat shields and check bracket and bolts are loose again. Its almost like that bracket isn't square against the tranny case. I buy some grade 8 allen bolts yesterday along with some star lock washers. I'm thinking about loosening the bracket that holds the crossover pipe first then installing the allen bolts to tranny case. I'm going to make a 3/16" allen bit to fit into an adapter so I get fit torque wrench in there and torque to specs which are 90-120 in/pounds.
Thought and suggestions would greatly be appreciated......goldie
Talked with the tech support guys at V&H and sent them the above pic. Unfortunately the left allen bolts was being or not being held in with a helicoil which has lost its grip. (Arrowhead HD installed that) So essentially just the right allen bolt holding the exhaust bracket. Bob at V&H had one of their engineers take a look at the photo and said that the 1" washer needed to under the bracket between the tangs on the clamp that goes around the crossover pipe and that was what was causing the binding on my system. He said to install bracket first then attach clamp around crossover pipe. Of course its going to get nice for the weekend so I've got it together and will watch that single allen bolt after each ride till I can get some help pulling the rear wheel and drilling &tapping out the left allen bolt hole to the next size up and not using a helicoil at all.....We'll see how this all works out....goldie
