Hello from New Hampshire. I'm interested in getting a lightly tinted license plate cover, as my plate sticks out like a sore thumb on my bike. Does anyone have any experience with one in NH? I've never had one on any vehicle, so I'm not sure if police would give you crap for one?
Check your online State requirements. It's illegal in VA. People use them to beat red light cameras.
Remember guys. This is not the POD. Don't make what I said political.
As a second thought if a cover won't work, I trimmed my mount for no over lap .Then I found Ebay China man special a stainless steel trim ring that is just barely 3/8 edge wrap with tabs for the screws. Used fillister head low profile but slightly larger diameter head SS screws to attach. Not sure of thread size nut I selected them to closely match the sheet metal course thread Harley fasteners diameter .
If you go that way, PM me for size if you need it.

See below.
This bill establishes a violation level offense for applying, or permitting to be applied, any covering on a license plate that is colored, smoked, or tinted. There is no method to estimate how many occurrences of this violation, if any, may occur. Therefore, this bills impact on state revenue is indeterminable. The Judicial Branch estimates average cost of violation level cases to be $52 in FY 2021 and $54 in FY 2022. It should be noted that average case cost estimates for FY 2021 and FY 2022 are based on data that is more than ten years old and does not reflect changes to the courts over that same period of time or the impact these changes may have on processing the various case types.
...so I'm not sure if police would give you crap for one?
I'm an active-duty patrol officer. As suggested in another reply, most states have a law that makes it illegal to obstruct or obscure a plate (or any part of it) in any manner. Obstructing/obscuring a plate is, generally speaking, a legal justification for a traffic stop. Once stopped, the vehicle, driver, and any passenger may be subject to further scrutiny. In other words, don't provide law enforcement a reason to make the stop in the first place.

So a clear lens would be acceptable in the states eye?

I think an officer would be hard-pressed to convince a court a clear lens obscured the plate. Again, the acid test is...can the plate, in its entirety, be seen and read from a reasonable distance without interference from coverings, objects, or even grime.
Yes, vehicles operate often with trailer *****, plate frames, and mud obstructing a plate. But if the plate is not legible from a reasonable distance, it's probably illegal. Will the driver be stopped? It really depends on the totality of the circumstances. Again, an obstructed/obscured plate is usually grounds for a legal vehicle stop. If illegal activity or contraband is discovered as the result of the stop, more serious charges or outcome my result.
A lot of clear covers can mask the plate from different angles. If an officer can articulate this, you’ll waste a day in court and still pay a fine. In NY state it is a moving violation. In NYC,it’s both a mover and a parking violation.

Don't have too in VA. The rule is plate cannot be covered. You could beat it with mud or such. But not a cover.
