Default mobil 1... i have 2 questions

is the "gold cap" 15-50extended performance the same oil as the old "red cap"? is anyone using it in all 3 holes? or is anyone using the mobil 1 v-twin 20/50 in all 3 holes with good results?

i just switched to mobil1 vtwin in all 3 holes, per a local shop and friend that has been running it for a few years.

sure makes it simple and easy to carry one qrt on trips for topping off all!

I love it and si far my bike seems to love it too!

I use Mobile 1 V-Twin in engine only. I am a believer in gear lube, so I use Mobile 1 75w-90 in the tranny and HD primary lube in the primary.

I think I was in it: I took hole #1.

But back to the post: I recently put Mobil V-twin in the engine and primary, and Mobil 75-90 in the tranny.

I went with Mobil 1 V-Twin in the crank and the primary, and 75/90 in the trans... sure does shift better and you can now actually find neutral...

Just curious. How many actually have to carry primary or transmission oils to "top up" on the road? How do you determine you need it in the case of the primary?

This use of one lube in all three holes for convenience doesn't make sense to me. IF you believe the motor oil/primary/transmission 20/50 is superior (and I don't) fine, go for it BUT please don't do it just for "convenience". That logic would have you using it for fork oil too!

Remember, specific lubes are made to do one job. Yep, the primary really doesn't matter that much because it is a spash lube and cooling system for the chain and clutch BUT the transmission and engine do. I don't like using additives in either that are there to COMPROMISE between whats best for one or the other in order to make them usable in both.

my only reason for 3 holes is in fact convenience, and apparently the moco does recommend it. not that i take their word as end all gospel. another question just popped in my head, does anyone know what "gear lube" weights are equal to in "motor oil" weights? my local autozone carries both the v-twin and extended performance versions, as well as the 75w-90 gear lube. so i have no problem using the gear lube as suggested. one more thing i just went to wal-mart at lunch and could not find the gold cap in 15-50, but rather a "new" bottle with silver cap 15-50. that bottle did not specify xtended performance, however it also did not have the "friction modifiers" listed in the JASO circle of info. that leads me to believe it would still be ok for MC clutch usage assuming the moly is low or non existant in the formula.
