Oil Help - 2007 Clatter 5th Gear Noise!
Hey All - I've been reading lots of the treards on fluids for the primary, engine and tranny. My less that 700 mile 2007 Road King Classis is awesome, except for all the clatter, especially the 5th gear whine crap. From what I can tell, it's not as bad as others are, but I want to quiet it down. I've got V&H classic touring slip ons that sound great and probably mask the clatter a bit... so, I'm going to have the 1000 miles on really soon and will be carrying my own fluids in to the dealer. I'm also going to be doing some long road trips through the Rockies, Sturgis, New mexico - running through a lot of hot temps. I've settled on Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50 for the engine, probably primary as well, and leaning towards the Mobil 1 75w-90 gear oil for the tranny. Here's the BIG question - anyone else with a 2007 Road King or other 2007 touring model using what I'm looking to run in my bike, and have you found it to help the clatter? Also, Is there a benefit or a problem running Mobil 1 75w-145 gear oil in the tranny? Help... looking for a winning combination, and one my dealer will not balk at. Thanks for your input in advance.

your going to get a wave of suggestions but your plan is ok. I have gone with Redline Heavy Shockproof in the gearbox and that has all but eliminated the clatter. I use Redline MTL in the Primary and have used Amsoil 20w-50 in the primary as well. I use Amsoil 20w50 in the engine. Have used Mobil-1 as well.
Bottom line: Your not risking your warranty if you use fluids rated to meet the manufacturers spec. Of all I ould most strongly recommend the shockproof Heavy duty. I suspect I am not alone on that

You're not going to find a cure with the changing of the oil in the clatter department. It's a bad design.Most have it but the few thatsay theirs don't do it may have different riding habits or not riding long enough to get it hot enough to hear the noise.
Using the M1 75/140 helps a tiny bit but hardly noticable at all.

The heavier gear oils will reduce the noise for sure. There are many out there:
Redline Shockproof Heavy (what I use) rated at 75w250 synthetic
Royal Purple 85w140 synthetic
Amsoil Severe Gear 75w110 synthetic
Bel Ray Gear Saver 85w140 (used by many HD dealers) not syn
Mobil1 85w140 or 75w90 both syn available at autozone
Just find any one over 75w90 that is rated GL5 and you are fine. The synthetics will take more punishment.
