Was really intrigued with Blueraven's post about a Redline Dolly. Laid down on the ground to measure the frame to see if it would work. Which it won't and I am bummed about that. While I was looking I see there is a film of oil sitting on the bottom of the engine case. Can't figure out as to what is leaking yet. Doesn't look like oil filter or the cooler in the area. Called the HD Store where I bought it. They are about 90 miles away and probably will need to leave it with them. Waiting to hear if they would be able to pick up the bike and tell me what's wrong. Just hit 5,000 miles yesterday. Bought it in June of 2016 with 30 miles new.
Man this sucks. I don't like oil leaks.
I know nothing tells a story with out pics. Kind of dark in the garage and I will try and a picture little later.
It may just be residual oil from the two oil changes that should have been done to your bike by now. Try cleaning it off with some type of cleaner, Dawn dish soap and a brush works well, then take it for a good ride and recheck it. Your bike is new enough not to have a leak.
I was just about to do my 5,000 mile change and I found this. First 1,000 was done at dealer.
Here is a few pictures I took. The oil filter area is clean.
I'd still clean it off and take her for a ride, that way you'll have a much better idea of just where the oil is coming from. Take her out in the yard and hit her with some brake cleaner and a few rags.
That is exactly what I am going to do. The Dealer called back and when he realized it wasn't dripping, he said it would be hard to find. So I will change the oil, do the 5,000 mile service, Wash it down and clean all of the oil off and ride. After each ride look to see where it is coming from. I don't like oil leaks.
Someone did a terrible job at an oil change or you have a leaking oil filter. Either way, easy fox with brake cleaner as stated above.
The only oil change was at 1,000 miles by the dealer. I looked at it again and there is no other sign of oil anywhere except at the bottom of the engine case.
I spoke with another dealer and they will be diagnosing the problem. There was another post with the same year bike at the 1,000 service they (his dealer) discovered oil on the bottom like mine and they are doing a complete rebuild. Personally I think the seal at the base of the cases are leaking slightly. I am taking it in tomorrow and leaving it with them.
Well when I was going to take her to the dealer I got sick...
I mean sick, both ends, ugh!!!!
Anyway I am better now and taking her in tomorrow.
My question is this...
If it's the case halves sweating oil and they have to split them, with 5,000 miles should the pistons be replaced, bored 10 over with new pistons and rings?
