I just got a price of $325 for my 5000 mile service. Can not see spending that much for service I should be able to do myself. . I will go back to stealer for a service manual but wanted to buy the gaskets I need. Can somebody please give me the part numbers for an 06 softail fatboy. primary cover gasketprimary inspection cover clutch inpection cover gasket..... I would greatly appriciate it I know the parts guy can look it up for me but want to be armed with the right numbers first....I'm doing service sunday and dealer is closed, got to get it right .....thanks again

I felt the same way and bought a Softail service manual at 20% off from the dealer. The dealer carries a 1K,5K & 10K gasket service kit (P/N 117361-05 (Heritage Softail)) for $17.95 but the only part from it I had to use was the o-ring for the oil drain plug. Every other o-ring and gasket was in great condition. If you are buying the stock air filter be careful, the carb and EFI filters are different.
Don't know the part number but I would just get ten or so O rings for the drainplugs (good to keep around) oil filter and a primary inspection cover gasket IF you plan on opening it. Get a Derby (clutch cover) gasket too if you are adjusting the clutch at the basket. Both of those gaskets are the same for all pre 07B motors so the parts should be familiar to the guy even without PNs. Sometimes they will leak with reusing the old one and seems like no rhyme or reason asto when, LOL.
Its a simple service and nothing really intimidating about it. Remember, with the drive belt and primary chain, a bit loose is better than too tight. IF too tight , you will know because the chain will "howl" and the belt may whine like the wheel bearings are going bad. Too loose, the bike will jerk forward at slow speeds in first(primary) or the belt will chirp when it skips from downshifting. Overtightening the primary chain can cause bearing wear as well as chain and sprocket wear too.
Navy and EZ that for the info. I will pick up the 5000 kit, should include clutch cover and primary inspection window gasket. Have a feeling I wont need to do anything that will require removing entire primary cover, guessing thatthe primary chain is fine and will only drain and refill. Will definatly pick up a bunch of drain plug 0-rings and a extra filter as I will change oil more often....planning to continue to rack up miles.Sound good
Chop, IF you don't do a clutch adjustment under the Derby cover, you can just refill the primary through the inspection cover. If so, either buy just the primary inspection gasket (small and cheap) OR get an extra one and save the Derby gasket (big round one) for your 10K service OR when you feel you need to adjust the clutch at the basket.
There are two clutch adjustments. One in the cable under the "accordian" rubber and the otherunder theDerby (basket). The cable adjustment just makes the play at the lever correct while the basket adjustment corrects the point at which the clutch plates engage and disengage. If the clutch drags with proper cable adjustment (clunky shift, hard to shift, neutral hard to find, clutch stays partially engaged) OR if the clutch slips (engine suddenly revs high like in neutral when in gear when under load) it needs adjustment at the basket. The adjuster consists of a threaded rod with an allen head at the end and a locknut. You turn the allen clockwise (in) untill lightly seated then back it out 1/2 to a full turn and tighten the locknut.
This proceedure is explained here in technical tips and in the SM from harley. Easy once you do it once or twice. For me, backing it out more to the 1/2 turn mark seems to make shifting easier and less clunky and I've never had it slip on its own.
I was just reading the Service manual on my 06 Road King and at the 5k mile service the manual states that only the engine oil is changed??? Not the trans or primary. Then why does it cost more than the 1k or 10k service??
I have done the service in all of my own bikes in the past but this is my first HD so im a little nervous but for $350.00 i think im going to do it myself.
