I used to work in a government installation in the middle of the Nevada dessert. We drove government owned, drug bust autos, and Air Force vehicles in all kinds of weather, 120* in summer to -degrees in the dead of winter, under very dusty conditions. Most of these vehicles were at least 5 years old and driven ever day between about 1 and 250 miles. These vehicles were serviced once every six months with reclaimed oil whether they needed it or not. They still run reliably. These are, mostly pickup trucks of all American makes, that are driven like no curb is too high, no parking space too narrow, and the only speed limit is, "Don't roll your vehicle!"
My question is: Are Harley-Davidson motorcycles so damn delicate that they need to have oil changed every couple thousand miles with the "best" synthetic oil available?
Yous guys worry too much or you gots way too much time on your hands. Go ride and change oil at the H-D recommended intervals with the recommended service oils and have done with it.
Changing you oil at short intervals is cheap insurance= yes
But think for one minuet who tells you to change your oil every 3k miles. the companies who make the oil.
Harley has to warrenty the product and im sure theyve done research about how long you should go on the oil so i would have to agree with Tripper on this one. Oil companies make money so they want to sell more, just think about that for a min.
My corvette came with Mobile 1 in it from the factory. The computer tells me to change it about every 10K miles. I run the same stuff in my bike, and I change it every 5K, cause that's what the manual calls for.
Do all those gov't vehicles lack radiators? IE: Air cooled? Low oil change intervals are not a necessity at all, but I do know what a shorter oil interval will do for engine longevity using synthetic. All of our regular customers have oil changes on regular interval changes(2500k dino, 5000k synthetic roughly), a few **** ones have it done sooner.
This oil forum just cracks me up. It's a hoot! People that worry about oil in their Harley's aren't as particular as what they put in their own bodies!
