Default Fluids for '92 DynaGlide Custom

Okay, I'm not a wrench, but I'm seriously thinking about changing all of the fluids in my '92 Dyna myself. I've changed the oil in a car a few times and it sounds like changing the fluids in my bike requires about the same skills (mainly just following directions.)

I mentioned something to an HD mechanic about changing everything to synthetic. He said he wouldn't do that for anything other than the transmission, since my bike is older. Something about the paper gaskets not being able to handle it or something? I don't know if this is true, though. Any input on that?

My real question is what fluids do you recommend for me for my bike for all three holes? Keep in mind that I'd like to make the shifting smoother...

Any input it all is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm thinking something like this (if synthetic is okay)?

Motor Oil - Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50 (NOT "energy conserving")
Transmission Oil - Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube
Primary - ???

I agree with the mechanic about the synthetics because gasket technology earlier than 1995 is sometimes effected by the syn oils. I would use the HD 360 20w50 for the engine, HD formula plus primary lubricant for the primary and any dino 75w90 GL5 gear oil for the trans that you can get at autozone, walmart etc. Valvoline makes a good dino gear lube but look on the label and if it's GL5 it is fine. If you go syn oils they will probably find all the microscopic voids in the gaskets and start seeping. This is all JMHO.I recommend you get a service manual for your bike to show you the way. Plus another helpful tip is a tube of white loctite or white teflon tape for sealing and locking the drain bolts. My Lowrider had white loctite on the bolts from the factory. You can get that at autozone as well. Best of luck.

Cool man, thanks for the advice. The tech said I could probably get away with synth in the transmission (since I want the shifting to be a little smoother), but if you think that's a problem too, I won't even mess with it. The last thing I want is to cause problems.

I should've also pointed out that the bike only has 18,000 miles on it and it runs freaking great! Don't want to mess that up for sure. I'll go with your advice. Really appreciate it.

Engine - HD 360 20w50
Primary - HD formula plus primary lubricant
Transmission - Any non-synth 75w90 GL5 gear oil that you can get at autozone, walmart etc.

Your trans will shift fine with dino 75w90. But if you want see if your dealer carries Bel-Ray 85w140 Gearsaver which is dino and has been used in Harley transmissions successfully for many many years. That will smooth that trans out nicely.

Just a little imput. I have the same bike, a '92 FXDC Dyna Custom with 32,000 miles on it. I went through the same exercise last season whether or not to change over to synthetic and I ended up doing it. I heard all the warnings about synthetic passing by seals and I figured, the worst that could happen is that if it starts leaking, I just dump out the Syn3 (what I used) and toss in some conventional oils. I have not had a single drop of oil come out of any part of the engine, trans, or primary. I may just be lucky or maybe somewhere back when the previous owner had it he swapped out the seals and gaskets, but it seems to be fine. I am now considering running a 75-90 in the trans, but I really have been happy with the Syn3. The bike seems to run a lot cooler as well with the synthetic oil.

So maybe if your nervous about it then just stick to conventional lubes, but I wouldn't count them out. My two cents. Good luck!

Syn3 is a GroupIII hydrocracked dino oil. So probably less likely to leak than a GroupIV or GroupV synthetic like Mobil1Vtwin or Amsoil or Redline.(Redline would probably leak)Some people like you have no issues but others have huge headaches switching an older bike to syn oil. That is why I don't want to tell someone to do it. I don't want them to blame their bike leaking on my advice.
