I got a 06 deuce and started to do my own oil change and stuff.
Just wondering how not to create such a mess when replace oil filter. I got oil all over the oil filter area. Wondering what you guys do to prevent the mess/ how to clean up.
Make sure you drain the oil before removing the filter. When you remove the filter once its loose use shop towels under it and all around it and don't dilly dally around getting it out of there. Replace drain plug, fill filter about 1/2 way with oil (don't forget to oil the seal). Quicky and carfuly again return the filter tighten until the gasket just touches then 1/2 turn more. Fill oil tank. To clean up the mess use Brake Cleaner and towel to get the most up. Then I always wash with S-100 cleaner and high Press washer (cold water). Works fine everytime.
Hope this helps.
Hi there...I have not changed my own oil as of yet but I can tell you this from reading this and other forums and watching the 'Fix My HOG" DVD[sm=insomnia.gif]. 1. Never, never use Carb Cleaner to clean up the oil on your bike...it will eat your paint. The Brake cleaner is the way to go. 2. Cut the side out of a 1 litre pop bottle an slide that under your oil filter before you take it of. There are pictures on this forum somewhere of this very method maybe one of the members here can point you in that direction. Maybe TCSTD could help and like he saids read the DIY section of the Forum some great advice there[sm=smiley20.gif].
I use rags and the Harley biodegradeable wash to get the oil off. S100 total cycle cleaner takes it all off too if you spray it on and let it soak for a minute. Oh yeah, if your wife has any stayfree mini pads stick one of those under the filter and that thing will soak up 5x it's weight in oil. Then when it's time to do an oil change...just tell the wife it's "that time of the month" for your bike LOL
